Are you sure this drawing of a spider is the one I sent you? This spider only has seven legs and I do not feel I would have made such an elementary mistake when I drew it.

Hello, I am back and have read through your emails and accept that despite missing a leg, that drawing of a spider may indeed be the one I sent you. I realise with hindsight that it is possible you rejected the drawing of a spider due to this obvious limb ommission but did not point it out in an effort to avoid hurting my feelings. As such, I am sending you a revised drawing with the correct number of legs as full payment for any amount outstanding. I trust this will bring the matter to a conclusion.

Regards, David.

As I have stated, we do not accept drawings in lei of money for accounts outstanding. We accept cheque, bank cheque, money order or cash. Please make a payment this week to avoid incurring any additional fees.

I understand and will definately make a payment this week if I remember. As you have not accepted my second drawing as payment, please return the drawing to me as soon as possible. It was silly of me to assume I could provide you with something of completely no value whatsoever, waste your time and then attach such a large amount to it.

The irony between Ms. Williamson’s attitude toward the construction noise and her smoking while pregnant is obvious (and somewhat painful). According to a follow up article in the Roanoke Times “Smoking is estimated to account for 20 percent to 30 percent of low birth-weight babies, up to 14 percent of preterm deliveries and 10 percent of all infant deaths. Asthma is twice as likely in children whose mothers smoke more than 10 cigarettes per day.”

More on Ms. Williamson:

She didn’t finish high school. She hasn’t seen her father since she was 13. She has worked in fast food, but doesn’t have a job. She’s heard of the Internet but says that she’s never used it. Oh yeah, her husband, the father, also smokes.

Here’s a story in which the Democratic party shows it doesn’t understand the rule of law, property rights, or the way the blogosphere works.

Plain and simple: they ripped us off.

Back in the summer of 2006 a friend of the blog sent along a camera phone shot he took of Senator John McCain at a Las Vegas craps table.

We thought it was funny (we wrote “I think it’s good for a presidential candidate to like playing the dice: accepts risk, understands odds, willing to bet on himself, can operate in a fast paced environment.”) and posted it. In July it was picked up by Time magazine’s Swampland blog.

A few days ago we received this email:

Hey,

I tracked back the picture of McCain at the craps table back to your site. I wanted to check to make sure that it wasn’t photoshopped. It seems from your posts that the pictures legit, but if you can email me back and let me know that would be helpful.

- Kombiz

Kombiz Lavasany
Democratic National Committee
202-863-xxxx (office) …

… and we replied

It was not photoshopped — the image on the site is straight from our correspondent’s camera phone.

We do ask that attribution accompany any use of the photos (emphasis ours).

At 31 seconds into this newly released DNC video you can see how our Independent Sources logo was carefully cropped out of the image they used:

There is no reference to Independent Sources anywhere in the video.

We support John McCain, but if the DNC wants to use some of our content to make a (ultimately embarrassing) video, that’s their right — so long as they respect our rights to our property.

Instead, the DNC decided to steal our image and ignore our specific request for attribution.

Is this a preview of the confiscatory policies we can expect from an Obama administration?

This is the second of the ten topics discussed by the students in Ambassador Derek Shearer’s Rebranding America project. The complete report can be found here.

The point papers or policy memo is divided into four sections - Problem, Strategic Interests, Means, and Possible Outcomes. The means section is further divided into subsections consisting of actions to be taken in the first month, first six months and one year and beyond time frames.

This is my summary of the student’s summaries:

Problem:

Transnational Terrorism is bad. Al-Qaeda and other terror groups have shown they can and will commit atrocious crimes and they want to kill Americans. Even though this has nothing to do with terrorism my first two sentences have me agreeing with President Bush entirely too much, and since this entire project is based around the premise that President Bush’s entire foreign policy is bad I can’t have that. Therefore, Additionally, the US torture policy at Guantanamo Bay and the Abu Gharib scandal are a source of lost credibility in the international community and do not demonstrate American respect for Human rights.

Strategic Interests:

The United States needs a coherent plan for dealing with the problem we caused through our political and economic repression of the world. The well-deserved attacks on 9/11 spurred the largest shift in foreign policy since the cold war and while that policy been effective in reducing terror attacks world wide, just as Reagan’s policies ended the Cold War, we don’t like it because it is

a) effective thus perpetuating the cycle of injustice that causes terrorism.
b) not very nice and we all know that it is more important that a policy feel good than it actually be effective.

Means:

First Month:

1. The President should immediately renounce the “War on Terror” terror is a tactic not an actor. Never mind that this a rhetorical device and since we are being so frickin’ literal we should also renounce the War on Poverty, the War on Drugs, the War on Male Pattern Baldness and the War on Erectile Dysfunction.

2. The US Army should stop killing babies and the US should start handling terrorism in accordance with international norms, such as abject surrender in the case of Spain, letting them run around out in the woods taking hostages and murdering people ala Columbia and the Philippines, or actively encouraging them to kill more Americans and some Jews as in the case of Iran, Syria, most of Africa and parts of Western Europe.

“the President should emphasize that a normative prohibition on targeting non-combatants and increased cooperation with other states in the international system are the goals of US counterterrorism strategy”

3. The next President should ensure the world understands that “with us or against us” is no longer a policy, instead we will handle terrorism as a violation of international norms, in the same way that genocide and nuclear proliferation is treated. It works for Darfur and Iran it should work on terrorism too.

4. <strike>Obama</strike> The next President shouldn’t be stupid enough to tell people this but he should realize that despite what I said earlier about al-Qaeda having the ambition and the ability to commit atrocious crimes 9/11 was really just a fluke. The fact that they had tried to bring the WTC down before, in 1993, and spent years planning and training for the mission in no way shows a level of sophistication that would allow another similarly scaled attack to succeed.

I know you guys think I make this up but here is the actual quote - “Though this should not be mentioned in the speech, the next President must also recognize that 9/11 was a long shot, and that it should not be cause for further restriction of freedoms or invasions.”

5. The next President should appoint an international terrorism expert to the National Security Council. This person should not come from within the intelligence community or the Department of Homeland Security and should be named <strike>Amb. Derek Shearer</strike> a noted scholar of international peace and security issues and will serve as the next President’s direct pipeline to the international counterterrorism framework.

OK Amb. Shearer I have pimped you for your next government job. Now can I have my A please?

6. The President should address the UN and let them know that terrorism is not an acceptable tactic for either state or nob-state actors. Since we are going to recommend that the address the UN about 75 more times during the course of this report he may want to try and schedule it all on the same day. While he is there he should give Iran mad props for speaking out against terrorism, even though the State Department considers them the number one terror exporter in the world. Maybe he could also thank them for exposing that entire Holocaust thing.

7. The President should repeal restrictions blocking pilots from carrying firearms aboard their planes. This doesn’t really have anything to do with addressing the causes of terrorism, which we have already established fall squarely at the feet of the US, but we have to give the slack-jawed mouth breathers in the square states something or they will start seeing black helicopters again.

Head about to explode - but must press on!

First 6 Months:

The next President should set up an International Compact to Undermine Terrorism (INCOUNTER). This program will do nothing new or useful but it does give me a chance to demonstrate just how clever I am by coming up a catchy acronym. Lucrative State department career here I come.

The President should shut down Guantanamo Bay. Not just the detention center but the entire base all it does is show how relentlessly imperialistic the US is. By closing the base we can once and for all cleanse the stain that is George W. Bush from the national psyche. The detainees still being held there should be returned to their home countries where they can immediately be released and returned to the battlefield. If their home countries refuse to accept them (true in many cases) or we are constrained by law from returning them too their home country we can just put them in a burlap bag with a bunch of raw meat and toss them to the sharks.

1 Year and Beyond:

The US must remove combat troops from Iraq. We are winning against al-Qaeda there and we can’t have that so our plan is to remove the 30,000 or so actual frontline combat troops and leave the 90,000 or so logistics and administrative troops unprotected. That should make it much easier for us to lose and our troops to be slaughtered thereby putting the final stake in the heart of this failed George Bush policy. The fact that terrorists don’t check MOSes before attacking never really occurred to us.

Continue the hunt for Osama bin Laden. Since President Bush is such a doofus I am sure he didn’t think of this we should freeze bin-Laden’s assets to keep him from funding any more of those super-lucky 9/11 style attacks.

Fight the public relations battle against terrorism. In all speeches, documents, National Security Strategies and other assorted measures the government should treat terrorism as a violation of a globally accepted norm rather than actually doing something about it.

Emphasize that there is no room for torture in the US response to Transnational Terrorism. The definition of torture may be a little slippery but if we establish the line at speaking harsh words we may be OK. This shouldn’t be a problem because “torture” doesn’t yield any useful information, except of course when it does.

Possible Outcomes:

We aren’t quite sure how, but we are positive that by reframing the conflict, increasing international cooperation, renouncing torture and creating a global anti-terror regime the risk of transnational terrorism will be significantly reduced allowing people to go about their lives with confidence. This is also a strategy that can be upheld as it does not require an endless war and reliance on fear. Until of course our actions are seen as capitulation enboldening the terrorists to start using suicide bombers in the US, but that will probably be on the next guys watch so who cares.

Despite it’s probable complete ineffectiveness this strategy is particularly politically viable because it completely divorces the US from all the actions of The Worst President in History George W. Bush(tm)

Note:I was flipping through this report again, despairing at all the work ahead because lemme tell ya it’s freaking tough pouring through this puerile adolescent crap, and I noticed two things.

The first - while discussing energy independence the claim is made that in 1997 the US and Kazakhstan were the only two countries not to ratify the Kyoto Protocols in 1997. Simply untrue. The protocols weren’t even open for signature until 1998 and many countries including Australia didn’t ratify them until much later.

Second - while discussing US / UN relations the authors say that the United States should close Guantanamo Bay and assure the UN that the US is committed to following the Geneva Conventions for all prisoners. Funny thing is though, nowhere in the rather extensive reading list for the course or in the works consulted list do I see the text of any of the Geneva Conventions mentioned, or for that matter any of the court cases dealing with the Conventions. So how do they know that prisoners are not being treated in accordance with them? Crystal Ball? Or maybe it’s just because the Democrats who are trying to make political points say so?

Once again I am amazed that people think this is higher quality work than the “experts” produce.

The Los Angeles Times‘ Chuck Culpepper points out that Australia is really winning the Olympic medal count if you adjust for population. As of yesterday (Monday), the Aussies had a medal for every 4.1 million residents … the U.S. one for every 25.3 million.

Culpepper’s table doesn’t go beyond #10 Azerbajan, but we have a good idea who’s last. Think of a giant up-and-coming nation that’s not China.

Yes, India has one medal — albeit gold — for its 1.1 billion people. In 10 meter air rifle, which sounds like a sport the IOC meant to drop but forgot to.

Abhinav Bindra’s win is, believe it or not, India’s first-ever gold in an individual event. The last gold of any type for the country was in field hockey in 1980, and the nation has only 12 medals of all types since independence in 1947.

If they were Aussies, they’d have, oh, 268 or so by now.

—
This article blames India’s consistently poor showing on excess bureaucracy (India sent 227 officials and 75 athletes to Athens), the lack of a sports culture, and the absence of a development system.

John Edwards’ artful admission of his affair with former staffer Rielle Hunter leaves several questions still unanswered but let’s start off with his official position just before Edwards’ orchestrated press assault from today:

“The story is false. It’s completely untrue. It’s ridiculous. I’ve been in love with the same woman for 30-plus years….The story is just false”

On Friday, 08/08/08 (timed to be overshadowed with onslaught of media coverage of the Olympics) Edwards downgraded his honestly level from 100% to 99%. Let’s look at what might fall into the 1% of deceipt:

Tort King Fred Baron

1. The “hush” money.

Significant funds were paid to Ms. Hunter by the campaign as well as by his friend and campaign manager Fred Baron. Edwards claims to have been unaware that the woman he was banging received any money from Baron. Baron claims to have done it out of the goodness of his heart since two good families were being harassed by the Enquirer.

Hunter and Young, the recipients of Baron’s generosity, were not high-ranking officials in the Edwards campaign. How Baron got to know them and how he decided to fund their move to California, and why he decided to do so without Edwards’ knowledge, might be the subject of more questions as the Edwards matter goes forward.

This money is on top of the $114,000 that Hunter was paid to create campaign sports even though she was fairly unqualified to do so after Edwards met Hunter in a bar. (TMZ/AOL).

2. Who is Frances Quinn Hunter’s father?

Ms. Hunter’s alibi over the fathering of her child is that it was a different married man that fathered the child. That is stunning in itself. And it’s not just any man but a person involved with the Edwards campaign who is also receiving side funds from Edwards’ finance campaign manager Fred Baron (see above). Looking at Frances Quinn’s birth certificate won’t help since the name of the father was left blank.

Party Gril Reille Hunter

3. What will Rielle Hunter do next?

Rielle is the wild card in all of this. What is going to keep her from sticking to Edwards story and Edwards has the “prisoner’s dilemma” to worry about. Even more than that, whatever amount of money that Baron is paying for her silence could be dwarfed by what she could make in a book deal or selling her story to the tabloids. But is she that kind of person?

As Lisa Druck, she was a Florida girl from the time she was born in Fort Lauderdale until she left in 1984, after spending less than two years enrolled at the University of Tampa. By 1987, she had ended up in the hard-partying New York circle of novelist Jay McInerney.

Hunter tells him that she left New York to move to Los Angeles to become an actress and to get away from the drug scene in New York. She said she got off drugs in California with the help of a healer.

In 1991, she married Alexander M. Hunter III, a lawyer; they lived in a $700,000 bungalow in Beverly Hills and started using the stage name Rielle Hunter, and in 1994 legally adopted that name. which is pronounced “Riley.”

In 2000 … her divorce was finalized. According to the records, she received $5,000 a month for all of 2000 and then $4,000 a month for the next year, and then the spousal support ended.

During the ensuing years, Hunter claimed to have spent a lot of money attending spiritual retreats and by May 2004, was tired of it, according to her Breathe Magazine conversation with McInerney. She said in that state of despair she had an awakening that was so startling — “For weeks after I couldn’t even leave my house.” By the end of 2004, Hunter had started a foundation promoting higher consciousness, and set up a Web site: beingisfree.org, in which she posted the Breathe Magazine story, photos of herself and other spiritual seekers, including a swami, an astrologer and a Malibu healer.

Then in 2006 she met Edwards in a bar, got a six-figure contract to make little web videos, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Despite Edwards announcement that he is done explaining himself and that this is now a private manner for he and his family (”I have given a complete interview on this matter and having done so, will have nothing more to say.”), until the three questions are answered this will remain an open topic.

While not specifically germane to this story, let’s look back at what John Edwards said in 1999 about Bill Clinton and his affair:

I think this President has shown a remarkable disrespect for his office, for the moral dimensions of leadership, for his friends, for his wife, for his precious daughter. It is breathtaking to me the level to which that disrespect has risen.

Early Sunday morning I hustled up to the LAX Post Office in order to overnight a check. At one time you could use Express Mail to mail an item on Sunday and have it arrive Monday.

The lady at the counter punched in the destination zip code. “It’ll arrive Wednesday,” she said.

“But I thought this was overnight delivery!”

“Express Mail doesn’t take packages on Sunday any more.”

“But then it should be there Tuesday, right? They’ll pick it up tomorrow, Monday, and it’ll be there the next day?”

“The computer says if you drop it off today it’ll be there Wednesday.”

“But if I drop it off tomorrow …”

“… it will be there Tuesday.”

“So if I wait a day to drop it off, it will get there a day earlier?”

“Yes.”

So I wonder: if I drop it off Tuesday, will it arrive instantaneously?

—
The lady at the counter did explain that since there was no Express Mail on Sunday — it’s been discontinued — the computer rolls the delivery guarantee back to the three day service. “It SHOULD get there on Tuesday,” she said, “but …”

It is the Post Office, after all.

This is the first of the ten topics discussed by the students in Ambassador Derek Shearer’s Rebranding America project.

IRAQ

Problem: After a stunning military victory over the army of Saddam Hussein, the US found itself caught in an insurgency within a civil war. We have reduced violence in Iraq over the last 18 months through the addition of more troops to the occupying force, but we are losing the war still.

Strategic Interests: Making sure Iraq doesn’t become an Iranian client state, or a failed state that offers terrorists a safe haven. Restoring international prestige by ensuring a smooth transition to a fully independent Iraq. Meeting humanitarian needs by restoring Iraqi infrastructure.

I am a little surprised that no mention of helping protecting vital energy resources isn’t mentioned as a strategic interest here.

Means:

First Month:

Military Assessment Immediately invite General Petraeus, Amb. Crocker, etc. to the White House for an assessment of the situation in Iraq.

Regional Summit: Immediately convene a summit consisting of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Turkey, Iran, and Syria as well as whatever (few) coalition partners are still participating in Iraq.

By including Iran we hope to show that attempts to make Iraq into an Iranian client state will not be tolerated, and to show disapproval for the way Iran is dealing with the rest of the world in regards to it’s nuclear program and rhetoric towards Israel.

By including Turkey the problems between the Turks and the Kurds can be resolved.

There isn’t anything specifically wrong with these steps, but they are presented as if they are brand new suggestions. This same idea of Regional Summits appeared in the Iraq Study Group report and in fact regional summits have been ongoing for awhile, Iran has even participated in a couple.

First 6 Months:

Engage the International Community: The international community hates us and our actions in Iraq, therefore we should tell them to put up or shut up. The president should go to the UN and demand peacekeepers. The UN and NATO should be given a mandate to operate in Iraq. UN member states should be hit up for money to help with rebuilding Iraqi infrastructure.

Address the Iraqi Parliment: Show how much we care.

Again there is nothing inherently wrong with the idea of more international cooperation in Iraq. What people seem to ignore is a) We can’t just hand NATO or the UN a mandate to come in and establish peace and order in Iraq. They have to agree to the responsibility. So far in large part they have refused. I guess the students feel that there will be such a wave of good feeling towards <strike>Obama</strike> the next president that those impediments will be easily overcome.

1 year and beyond:

Withdraw US forces: We are losing, therefore we should withdraw. To keep from looking like defeatists and to allow America to maintain some prestige we should establish a set of easily met benchmarks and spread the withdrawal of the next 4 years. The idea of another surge is a political non-starter given that <strike>Obama</strike> the next president will be deeply beholden to the liberal netroots movement.

Open up the Green Zone: This will make us look less like an imperial power. Move the US Embassy out of Saddam’s palace.

Rebuild Iraqi Infrastructure: Show how much we care by making sure everyone has running water and electricity, a standard that wasn’t met under Saddam by the way. Rebuild the oil industry infrastructure to help stabilize the economy.

I actually agree with the embassy idea. I always thought it was a bad idea to locate in the Republican Palace to begin with. The troop withdrawal scheme here especially pisses me off, in that it completely ignores the incredible progress that has been made in the last 18 months. Otherwise there is nothing new here; well except for the idea of rebuilding Iraqi infrastructure, this is a really good idea, I mean up to now America has been content to have Iraqi’s sitting in the dark dying of cholera and typhoid from polluted wells. Damn us!

Possible Outcomes: Only bad. There is a very slight chance that by raping Iraq’s natural resources we may be able to provide the facade of democracy, stability and a market economy, but this is an Arab nation so lets get real.

President Bush well and truly screwed us here. About the best we can hope for is that a regional war won’t start. This is why we need increased international involvement, that way if Iraq does fail the US can shift blame to the international community.

Yes they really did advocate shifting blame to the international community, “If Iraq becomes a failure, the United States can also abdicate itself of some of the blame by engaging in a more international approach.”

Personally given the political developments, like al-Maliki taking on the Shia militias and the return of the Sunni coalition to the government, as well as the major reduction in violence, I would like to see us planning a little more for victory and a little less for defeat. That seems the best way to extricate ourselves, not trying to find a way to blame other people.

The John Edwards “Love Child” story (originally broken at the end of 2007, National Enquirer above) became a local (that is Los Angeles) story when the National Enquirer story wrote that John Edwards left the Beverly Hilton room of Rielle Hunter recently at 2:30 am. Despite this the LA Times has continued a hands off approach to the topic. Why? LA Observed’s Kevin Roderick has the answer referencing a LA Times internal email surfaced by media watcher Mickey Kaus:

In a move that has apparently stirred up some internal discontent, the Los Angeles Times has banned its bloggers, including political bloggers, from mentioning the Edwards/Rielle Hunter story. Even bloggers who want to mention the story in order to make a skeptical we-don’t-trust-the-Enquirer point are forbidden from doing so.

Much more on Edwards Love Child here.

I guess this is more of that “two Americas” John Edwards was talking about. One America is where you sanctimoniously pose for family pictures with your wife and family. The “other” America is where you bang the crap out of the Reille Hunter’s of the world in hotel rooms around the country. Why the media is so infatuated with this guy is one of the bigger mysterious of the this election.
