I HATED Star Trek!!!!!!
Let me start out by saying I am not a Trek purist. I don’t engage in the who was the better Captain wars (although it was Kirk), I am not fanatical about Rodenberry’s vision of the future, I just liked the show. Next generation not so much, Voyager had potential but ended up stuuuuupid, the later seasons of DS9 were pretty good and the few episodes of Enterprise I watched I enjoyed.
That said I really hated this movie. I had suspected I would since seeing the trailers, but I really did try and give it a fair chance.
Being fair it had some good parts. The opening scene was awesome, and the effects were excellent. Not just the effects I thought the visual design was superb too.
The two things that just grated on me though were:
a. The story – It was just a retard story. Yes it gave the backdrop for the series reboot but there were other ways to accomplish that. It was just an excuse to have Kirk running around acting impulsive and not very Kirk like.
b. The characters. The actors didn’t fit the characters they were playing. Not only that but there was no chemistry between them. It was painful to watch them try and recreate the banter from the original series. especially McCoy’s character. I was actually gritting my teeth as the actor delivered the lines. The one exception – Simon Pegg as Scotty. He was great. No James Doohan of course but he fit the role well.
Anyway that’s my take on it.
One last thing the girl who plays the green alien chick also plays Scarlett in the upcoming GI Joe movie. She is hot even painted green.

I loved it. I thought Kirk was Kirk, and the other actors nailed their parts. Bones was always stiff and mean-spirited, Kirk led with his penis and photon torpedos, and Spock was aloof and cold. Uhura I thought was given a little more character than she ever showed on the series, but it was basically within logic. Toss in the big booms, bar fights, etc.., it made for a complete movie. My only gripe was I thought the ending was too sudden and messy. There really was no resolution to several huge issues raised during the movie. Now, I will add that as a long-time Star Trek fan, there were subtle things all through the movie that added appeal. In the tv series, you never really understood how Pike wound up like he did. There was a toss-off explanation, but it didn’t really go into any character development. So, the big “answer” was not so much how the main characters came to be, ie, a reboot, it was answering the story of how Pike wound up like he did, which was the impetus for The Menagerie, which the tv show used as it’s original reboot. There are lots of little asides that show a deep respect for the tv series. And, it sure is a lot more fun than the last couple of TNG movies.

I refuse to watch it. I *am* a purist. I don’t even like the digital re-creations of the Enterprise fly-bys on TOS. They look good, but they’re not *right*.

As a puff piece, popcorn gobbling action film that had very little to do with the Star Trek universe, this was not a bad film. But, and I am no purist, this was definitely not Star Trek and had some glaring illogical points to it.
Kirk is in the academy. If they follow any kind of military protocol, that would have put him as an Acting Ensign, maybe a Lieutenant J.G. if he distinguished himself, on the Enterprise at the beginning of the film. You’re telling me Star Fleet would have allowed a Captain (Pike) to appoint an Ensign as the First Officer?! Um, there was no one on that ship at all besides Spock that had more experience and a higher rank than Kirk? Especially on the flag ship of the fleet… Then, after all is said and done with the main story, Kirk officially graduates from the academy and is given the rank of Captain and command of the flag ship.
While I liked the visual effects through most of the film, I really hate the new idea of the phasers as burst fire weapons. What happened to the long beam weapon for Star Fleet and the burst fire disruptors for the other governments. Just bugs me a little.
I agree that the actors did not fit the parts. I disagree with your assessment of Karl Urban. I think he, Zoe Saldana, and Simon Pegg did well with the parts, but still didn’t hit the bullseye with the parts. The rest were crap… but I think the parts were written that way. Not so much the actors’ faults as the writers and director.
