Time to Fire the Marketing Department

The Woolworth’s chain in England thought they had a winner on their hands when they started stocking a a whitewashed wooden bed with pull-out desk and cupboard intended for girls aged about six. That was until they learned the name they were marketing it under, the “Lolita“, had undesirable implications for its use.

It appears that no one up or down the supply chain took a step back to wonder if it was a good idea to name a bed after a controversial novel (and subsequent movie) named after a 12-year old girl who was sexually abused by her stepfather. Furthermore anyone who reads the news (or goes to Wikipedia) would also know that this term is sometimes used by sexual predators in the pre-teen sex trade.

Since they were determined to name the bed after a movie, one can only wonder what other movies were tossed around before they settled on “Lolitta”…

    “First Blood”
    “Never Been Kissed”
    “Snatch”
    “Dirty Dancing”
    “Show Girls”

By the way, Woolworths said the product had now been dropped. The branding department should be next.
