Why Bono is wrong
No, I’m not talking about Zoo TV (which he was wrong) but Africa. Independent Sources’ hosting problems last week (thanks LoserPages) kept me from doing something more in depth on this topic so you’ll just get this excerpt:
The Kenyan economics expert James Shikwati, 35, says that aid to Africa does more harm than good. The avid proponent of globalization spoke with SPIEGEL about the disastrous effects of Western development policy in Africa, corrupt rulers, and the tendency to overstate the AIDS problem.
SPIEGEL: Mr. Shikwati, the G8 summit at Gleneagles is about to beef up the development aid for Africa…
Shikwati: … for God’s sake, please just stop.
Suffice to say that that we had a similar experience with pouring money into a structure problem leading to an even greater structural problem. From a commenter of th above post: “Maybe Lyndon Johnson’s heart was in the right place when he brought the Great Society to bear on America, but the inflation, multi-generational welfare trap, and the giant concrete utopian monster structures did a lot more damage than anyone could have imagined.”
