Sad: Two Brothers Die In Separate Freeway Crashes Hours Apart
From FindaGrave.com:
Maine (June 10) - Two brothers were killed in separate highway crashes in this coastal town just hours apart.
Adrian Basford, 52, of Winterport, died Saturday afternoon when his motorcycle went out of control on U.S. 1A, crossed a driveway and struck an embankment. State police said Basford was traveling too fast while rounding a curve.
His brother, Wallace Basford, 48, then died just before midnight in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. 1. His van failed to negotiate a left turn as he was coming off a bridge and slammed into a wall, the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department said.
Wallace Basford had gotten word of his brother’s death that day. Trooper Stephen Hills, who investigated the motorcycle accident, said Wallace Basford told him that the brothers’ father had recently died.
In the first crash, there were no skid marks and the speedometer of Adrian’s motorcycle was locked at 66 mph. Adrian was not wearing a helmet.
In the second accident, Wallace Basford’s 1991 Ford van crossed the Penobscot Narrows Bridge southbound and collided with a ledge at a high rate of speed. Speed “was a huge factor” in the accident and there were no signs of braking or trying to avoid the crash, the sheriff said.
It is thought that Wallace might have been drinking in response to his brother’s death. It is also believed that the brothers’ father had recently passed away.
