Don’t think we need legal reform? Dry Cleaning “Suit” Should Change Your Mind

Man files $67 million lawsuit for a lost pair of pants. Targets Korean Immigrants Just Trying to Make a Living.

The really, really scary thing is that the lunatic plaintiff in this non-case is a judge. Yes, he’s the person that is supposed to protect society from this type of lawsuit abuse. He is either an idiot or a very clever pro-tort reform advocate who decided to file the most ridiculous lawsuit possible in order to wake up the country to the need to rein in nuisance suits.

Plaintiff Roy Pearson, a judge in Washington, D.C., says in court papers that he’s been through the ringer over a lost pair of prized pants he wanted to wear on his first day on the bench.

He says in court papers that he has endured “mental suffering, inconvenience and discomfort.”

He says he was unable to wear that favorite suit on his first day of work.

He’s suing for 10 years of weekend car rentals so he can transport his dry cleaning to another store.

And lawyers wonder why they are ridiculed.

Update: A blog covering the same story added this:

According to the American Bar Association, there are more than one million lawyers in the United States. This means that one in about every 300 people in the United States is an attorney.

America is increasingly becoming a litigious society. With less than 5% of the world’s population, our society boasts about 70% of the world’s lawyers. 18 million lawsuits are filed annually, clogging the dockets and forcing the wheels of justice to grind more slowly and creak more loudly than ever before.

Update: The “judge” has a history of abusing the judicial system. Read it here including servicing his wife with 248 evidentiary requests for admissions in their divorce case. Also further evidence that Judge Pearson’s abusive tactics may be racially motivated.
