Kaplan writes: "I know it's a bit premature, but I'm searching for a semblance of my place in history and am coming up empty." Let me help - you're a maudlin writer for a worn out newspaper. Everytime it looks like you're going to take responsiblity for your life you blame others, as in, "The failure is not entirely our fault. In fact, it's clear now that the expectations vested in my generation 40 or so years ago were too much, too soon" and also as in, "But this is exactly where we failed — or where history failed us." So either the bar was set to high, or history failed you. In a roundabout way you expose where you really fouled up, "the hip-hop generation, which has plenty of attitude but little vision of what came before it and what will come next." Very true, and very much your generation's fault. This is what keeps you up at night. Try addressing that, and maybe when you turn 50 you won't feel so guilty.
