There is something very wrong in the world when…

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006 by Insider

“The harshest penalty in the BALCO steroid case may to the the reporters who broke the story.”
Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada of the San Francisco Chronicle face longer terms in prison than the combined sentences of all the defendants convicted in the steroid scandal they helped expose.
This is so wrong.
Meanwhile Barry Bonds continues to profit […]

Independent Sources’ list of unnecessary redundancies repeated more than once

Monday, November 13th, 2006 by Insider

I, myself, have been working on a written list of unnecessary redundancies. How many of these do you hear or (gasp) use yourself? (Yes, “written list” and “unnecessary redundancies” would both qualify):

hollow tube
armed gunman
freezing cold
free gift
near miss
financial accounting
natural instinct
absolutely perfect
past history
new beginning
grown man
silly clown
visual images
SAM missle
ATM machine
Oxymorons:

awfully good
genuine reproduction
pretty ugly
almost always
touch-tone dialing
Bonus:
We’ve all heard that […]

Suzanne Somers: Medical Expert?

Saturday, November 11th, 2006 by Insider

Undaunted by near-universal condemnation from the medical community on her last book on menopause, Thigh Master’s Somers is back with more pseudoscience in “Ageless”:

Somers’ response to her degree’d critics:
“Doctors are embarrassed that they don’t know about this. When doctors don’t have an answer, they like to pooh-pooh it.”
I don’t know about you but as a […]

Irony: Ralph Nader Sends Out Spam

Friday, November 10th, 2006 by Insider

I’m not sure why, but there is something wrong about Ralph Nader sending out Spam. It’s kind of like seeing him show up in a converted limo Hummer smoking Kools with a too-young model hanging on each arm. Isn’t this guy supposed to be consumer friendly? To me there is nothing further from consumer friendliness […]

Times doesn’t think Polanski’s sex crimes are relevant for article about him

Thursday, November 9th, 2006 by Insider

The Los Angeles dedicated an entire article on Roman Polanski’s inclusion in “Rush Hour 3″ and barely mentions his legal problems in the United States (saying only “famous fugitive” after “film icon”). Times writer Jay Fernandez makes light of the fact that people may not remember Polanski (sarcastically calling him “some guy named Polanski” […]

Your meaningless little existence

Thursday, November 9th, 2006 by Insider

That insignificant-looking, little spec is our world.

From an anonymous email submission:

In September, the Cassini spacecraft in orbit around Saturn took the picture you see when … [with] Saturn eclipsing Sol. The camera was facing back toward the inner solar system, so the sun is behind the ringed planet. Look closely at the 10 […]

A judge in San Francisco has halted that city’s effort to “make bicycling in the city easier and more convenient.”
The reason? There needs to be an environmental impact report.

Schwarzenegger To Dash Independent Sources’ Hopes?

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006 by A Senior Administration Official

The day after his re-election, there is speculation that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s next race will be for Barbara Boxer’s Senate seat in 2010.
Which would be a shame, since it would mean that the Independent Sources - owned domain boxer2016.com will have no value. Because we don’t see America’s Most Annoying Senator (r) winning that race.
There […]

US Presidential Speeches Tag Cloud

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006 by Insider

Fascinating.
Particularly relevant to those who think tag clouds are destined to the Web 2.0 trash heap.
Make sure to use the slider to look at the changes in rhetoric throughout U.S. history. For example the words “Pagan,” “Sober” and “Breasts” all appeared in John Adams’ speeches but not those of later Presidents.

Hotels now offering “Procreation Vacations”; New meaning to “room service”

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006 by Insider

“Hey you two! Get a hotel room” has been replaced with “Hey you two! Go on a procreation vacation”

Hotel Employee Marie
Says Starwood marketing executive Bill Thompson:
“We’re simply enhancing the baby-making process…”
The latest trend to hit the hospitality industry is procreation vacations. What married (and unmarried) couples used to do for free in the privacy […]

The Real Reason For The Los Angeles Times‘ Circulation Woes?

Monday, November 6th, 2006 by A Senior Administration Official

I like the Los Angeles Times. I’ve subscribed since I moved to Southern California twenty years ago, and I even pay about $240 / year for seven day delivery instead of the $99 rate I hear that I can get. I live in a zip code where — unlike parts of the west side — […]

Are Strip Bars Causing A Recession?

Monday, November 6th, 2006 by Chad

NPR reports that since 2001 banks have been ordering more $2 bills. Last year they ordered $122m worth. One of the reasons given: strip bars like to make change in $2 bills because it leads to higher tips for dancers and bartenders.
Now I am not an economist, but one of the things that I remember […]

Kanye West: Losing at MTV Europe Music Awards

Upset that he didn’t win the best video at the MTV Europe Music Awards, rapper (and Katrina relief expert) Kanye West crashed the stage and cussed through a mindless tirade stating he deserved the award for his video “Touch the Sky”:

“F*ck dis! (My video) cost a million dollars, […]

Parole Board Blows it Again; Teen strangled to death by recently-freed killer

Friday, November 3rd, 2006 by Insider

Danny Rouse, Two-Time Child Killer
Ever wonder why neighborhoods rise up in anger when they learn a parolee of a violent crime is in their midst? Would you? Some would tell you that parolees have served their time and these NIMBYs are both unfair and unjust. Of course people are welcome to their opinions even when […]
