Shocking! Teens don’t flock to Wal-Mart Social Network; Site Closes

Sign of a Web 2.0 Bubble: Wal-Mart launching a social network

From the Department of WTF! we learn that Wal-Mart attempted to launch a social network. Mercifully, they shut it down after just 3 months.

What could possibly have gone wrong with a Wal-Mart social network aimed at teens? What could possibly have kept legions of teens from wanting to upload photos and video on to a Wal-Mart site?

Could it have been the inherent uncoolness of the brand? How about the “heavy-handed corporate approach, parental notifications and lack of interactivity provided no incentive for MySpace-savvy kids.” How about the fact that there are already far too many social nets as it is and in all likelihood Wal-Mart would be the bottom choice of just about any self-respecting kid?

ComScore data showed the site had 91,000 uniques in August, the first full month after it opened which is about .0000001% of the people who shop there (or thereabouts).

Sheesh.
