What do you call 320 lb behemoth who stomps on heads? A defensive tackle

For those of you who don’t follow football, Albert Haynesworth has a bit of an anger problem. And at a towering six foot six inch your best bet is to hope that he’s mad at someone else.
How mad does Haynesworth get?
Just this past Sunday, Haynesworth ripped the helmet off of an opposing football player (Dallas’ Andre Gurode), threw him on to the ground and then stomped on his head.
Then, for good measure, Haynesworth raked his cleats twice across Gurode’s face, opening wounds that required 30 stitches.
Haynesworth’s anger management isn’t limited to the field. Just this last May, police issued a warrant for his arrest after receiving a complaint that while driving his car he had tried to run another driver off the road.
He also seems to have a particular problem with centers. In 2003, he triggered a brawl during training camp when he kicked center Justin Hartwig.
The league has suspended him for five days which will cost him around $190,000. A penalty Moon thinks is way too light (and so do we).
I do give credit to Haynesworth for two things. One, he immediately took responsibility for his actions. Yes, his stomping was witnessed on live TV by million and then millions more on YouTube (see below)–but that doesn’t stop other steroid-laced jocks from trying to duck fault. The other thing is that he at least appears to vent his rage on other football players who are at least: 1) males; and 2) big enough to fight back (though I’ll admit it’s hard to fight a guy who just walks up and kicks you in the head). Haynesworth’s attacks are certainly better than the wife, girlfriend and ho beatings we see so many other other pro and collegiate players commit.

A five game suspension is appropriate. I’m hearing a lot of whining from people who don’t even watch football and who consequently view this incident in terms of their own inactive worlds. It’s not as if the guy in the next cubicle walked over and kicked you as you were buttering your scone. Football is a violent game played by huge men who beat on each other for sixty minutes. When they go too far they are punished in a way that football people feel is appropriate. The NFL doesn’t need Moon or Insider pontificating from behind their Sudoku puzzles.

Sudoku is a fabulous game…but I like football a whole lot more. I’m an avid sports fan and actually work for the NCAA. I think Sunday’s incident is deplorable and sends an awful message to thousands of kids who were watching the game. Five games aren’t enough. Football is a violent sport, but it’s still a game. There is never an appropriate reason to stomp on someone’s head with your cleats. He should have been benched for the year.

Football is a tough game played by angry men particularly on the defensive side. The only way to play effectively is be angry. What AHaynesworth did was totally uncool, but most fans don’t see what goes on in between the two opposing frontlines. Still, he (Haynesworth) should have handled it differently. What’s interesting to note, is from that point on, the Cowboy players took it out on Albert’s teammates, legally, within the rules of the game, with several vicious hits.
