Microsoft Confirms That It Is Developing a Competitor to the iPod – New York Times

After denying rumors about an “iPod” killer in the works Microsoft yesterday announced plans for developing just such a device.

It is believed the products are targeted for release during the Christmas season.

Record company executives have to love this because suddenly Apple won’t be able to dictate price. Hardware manuafctures should like it because once Apple’s strangle hold on the .mp3 player market is broken then they will get a bigger slice of the pie. Consumers should like it because competition always drives price down and features up. In all if Microsoft is successful this will be a very good thing.

BTW: Microsoft can eliminate a lot of the concern among hardware vendors by announcing a partnership plan with RCA, Creative etc. in which they can license the right to manufacture the MS player
