Mayor Sam notes that the LA Department of Animal Services fundraiser at a Hooters outlet in Hollywood has been cancelled by city officials. Once again this demonstrates why city governments are simply no fun. It’s a charity even and Hooters operate legally throughout the city. The slogan wasn’t even sexist, “Hooters for Neuters.”

Of course if it was an Independent Sources organized fundraiser, we’d be at the Wild Goose and would be suggesting slogans like this:

“Like animals? Come see what real tail looks like!”
“Screw Peta. Support LA Department of Animal Services!”
“What happens at Independent Sources fundraisers, stays at Independent Sources fundraisers.”

Speaking of hypocrosy, one commenter on Mayor Sam noted that Antonio Villaraigosa took campaign donations from Playboy as did other local officials including Galanter, Rosendahl, Weiss, Feuer, Wachs, Hayden and Woo. Playboy is full nudity while Hooters is fully clothed women in a restaurant chain. What gives?

LA Observed reports that Deputy Mayor Jimmy Blackman was the party pooper.

Update: Blackman was just the man that had to deliver the bad news and the person to fall on the sword, the behind-the-scenes nixing was City Controller Laura Chick who was quoted as saying “One of my priorities as an elected leader is empowering women…”. (Too bad doing something about the 19,500 animals euthanized by the city she works for every year didn’t make the priority list.)

A far more reasonable response came from Stephanie Crawford, head of Animals Rule Placement Foundation in San Pedro, who said that she would not have attended such an event but the cause needs all the money it can get but Chick was too high on her horse to have adopted that approach and this was too good of an opportunity to get a soundbite in on an easy target. Animals don’t vote.

However taking the cake for coming off more-Holy-than-though is Councilman Jack Weiss who said:

“I’m not the sort of person who notices the scantily clad woman…”

While not knowing much about Mr. Weiss’s personal tastes, the history of mankind makes this statement self-serving and highly unlikely.

By the way, Hooters has raised millions of dollars for U.S. nonprofits who didn’t feel the need to exploit Hooters’ involvement to make a public play to their far-too-PC bases.
