Los Angeles Times: “Too Liberal” Charges = Racism?

The Los Angeles Times’ Peter Wallsten on Tennessee Rep. Harold Ford, who hopes to become the first black Senator from the old Confederacy since Reconstruction:

Ford and his strategists have been laying plans should race — or the kinds of racial codes that marked other campaigns, including charges of being too liberal — emerge in the fall.

Being too liberal is “code” for racism? How about the charge of “liberal” just meaning what it says?

Liberal interest group Americans for Democratic Action likes Ford, approving 80% of his votes in 2005. That ties him for second among the Tennessee congressional delegation.

The similarly lefty Public Interest Research Group ranked Ford at 81% for 2005, and 69% lifetime. Of Tennessee’s nine congresspeople, that’s the second most liberal record.

Ford should expect to be called liberal during the race. But unhappily for the LAT, it will only mean he’s being held to his record — not that his Republican opponents are perfidious racists.

    John the Marine Says:

Typical of a Liberal rag editorial page. If you disagree with a… gasp! person belonging to a minority you automatically must be racist. Name calling is all the LAT has. Why don’t they try to prove the criticism is incorect? Answer: because this guy is an umber Liberal and they want to insulate him from a challenge. Simply put it is Lefty victim politics.
