Ward Churchill pink slip inches closer

CU’s Standing Committee on Research Misconduct has made its recommendations to the provost. SCRM voted 6-3 to recommend Churchill’s dismissal, with the minority voting to recommend suspension. (From Pirate Ballerina).

Excerpts from the report:

The Standing Committee on Research Misconduct at the University of Colorado at Boulder has accepted the conclusions of the Investigative Committee that Professor Ward Churchill has committed serious, repeated, and deliberate research misconduct.

The Standing Committee did not reach, or seek, consensus with regard to disciplinary actions. Six of the voting members recommended dismissal from the University. Three members recommended suspension without pay; two of these recommended suspension for five years and one recommended suspension for two years.

Many have asked how Professor Churchill received a tenured Associate Professor position, and subsequent promotion to Full Professor, apparently without going through normal review processes. We share that question, but have no answers since it was not directly germane to our investigation.

In the 20-page report the committee confirms the previous findings that Churchill “intentionally falsified his research, plagiarized other people’s work and ghostwrote articles and then cited those to buttress his work.”

It’s almost become tiring reporting on this and I’m constantly amazed at what it takes to fire a professor for misconduct. It’s not a death sentence he’s fighting, just a taxpayer supported job. While educators do need certain protections from political pressure, the Churchill case shows how far the pendulum has swung away from remembering this is about educating students. Forgotten in all of this are the kids who deserve the best possible professors. Does anyone in this believe that an individual who intentionally lied about his ethnicity to get the job, repeatedly falsified his research, and appears to have no qualms about tying up the university in litigation in a failing attempt to save his own job is the best possible professor for University of Colorado students?

As important is the fact that if it was student who engaged in any of this misconduct they would at the least immediately fail the class. What kind of message does it send if a tenured professor isn’t held to, at least, proprtionally equivalent standards.

The students deserve a professor who is capable of accepting constructrive criticisms of their work by their peers. Had he gone through the normal process of review his behavior would most likely be the same as it is today. He is not capable of accepting outside criticisms and that’s something every professor has to accept. He should be suspended for 100 years w/o pay. Maybe CU will save $ by doing so.

Let him keep his job. The University of Colorado is already a joke. Half the student body is kids from California who couldn’t get into any of the UCs and were too late with their applications to Arizona. Nobody goes there to learn shiat, so a guy like Churchill can really thrive, since he doesn’t know shiat.

Well since our public schools, K -12, pretty much suck… Why not our colleges as well. Obviously, spewing leftwing hatred of the US is more important than teaching real academic material.
