Things simmering in Venice (CA)

Why people tune out “community activists”

At a community meeting to discuss gang violence in Venice, California, several African American residents verbally attacked the area’s wealthy new homeowners. Instead of being happy that the new more well-heeled arrivals were helping gentrify an area better known for its murder rate, gang violence, and drug sales, the newcomers were berated for putting up security fences around their homes. Said Stan Muhammad, director of a Venice gang intervention group:

Why do they have these fences?

Is it because of gang violence? No.

Is it because of drugs? No, it’s not.

It is because of the fear born of guilt.

Sorry Stan, the “fear born of guilt” you speak of doesn’t steal cars, commit home invasion robberies, or do drive-by shootings. Just a decade ago, Venice was the home of some of the worst gang violence in Los Angeles history. It should be obvious the fences are to keep out the very people your group has failed to control. If you want to blame someone, why not them?
