Another day, another Ferrari crash in the neighborhood

I’m not sure what it is about Ferrari drivers but at this rate there won’t be many of them left. If you haven’t heard, another idiot in a sports car killed himself in a single car crash in the Santa Monica Mountains. This time it was a Ferrari Testarossa in Agoura Hills, which adjoins Malibu.

As a regular bicyclist on the road where this Ferrari crashed (as well as on PCH where the notorious Ferrari Enzo crash occurred), I have very little sympathy for the selfish morons that fly through the streets of Malibu fantasizing they are on a closed Formula One race course. I am thankful that both of these accidents limited to single-car crashes and thus innocent lives were not lost in the crashes–notwithstanding the fact that the Testarossa had a passenger. [The Times is reporting that one of the two victims may have an off-duty California law enforcement officer, which is sad. But when a car is traveling fast enough to cause the damage below, I’m not sure I’d call it an “accident” other than as in “waiting to happen”.

Not to rant but I am getting pretty sick of ‘boy toy’ drivers forgetting that their are other cars on the road. A week ago an 18-year old driver in a sports car (someone needs to shoot the parents of that boy) was flying on Sunset Blvd. and drifted into oncoming traffic in Pacific Palisades and caused a near-head on. I’m not sure the status of the innocent driver who the sports car crashed into, but by the look of the wreckage they are not doing well. There were medevac helicopters flying over our neighborhood, which is never a good sign.

I’m not sure what can be done to curb these irresponsible idiots, but I’m certainly willing to listen to suggestions other than “natural selection” which will take too long.

Update: Local station CBS2 reported that the traffic collision apparently involved two cars not one. The other car was Ford Mustang. The collision occurred at 3434 Cornell Road at 3:21 p.m., near Agoura Hills. (Here is the video report). (I just looked at the video of the CBS news report which included witness accounts as well as today’s LAT story and was no mention of a 2nd car in either.)

Update: Authorities Wednesday identified the off-duty California Highway Patrol officer killed in the crash of a Ferrari this week as Derek Midollo, 39, an officer from the Woodland Hills station. He was officer of the year in 1999 and if there was one profession which one would expect people to know the dangers of reckless driving it would be being a CHP officer. Witnesses describe the Ferrari flying into a tree before coming down upside-down in the yard of former “Dallas” actress Morgan Brittany.
