MySpace Follies: Police bust teen who posted picture of himself smoking pot
Daniel Blanchard, a California high school student thought it’d be cool with his homies to post a picture of himself smoking pot out of a bong on MySpace. Unfortunately for Blanchard, a Placer County Deputy Sheriff came across the picture. This sheriff is also the School Resource Officer assigned to the teen’s high school and called him into his office to talk about it. During questioning the Blanchard’s backpack was searched and was found to contain marijuana, hashish and a marijuana pipe. He was, of course, busted. It should be noted that the “it’s not mine” defense is greatly weakened when the police are armed with a photo (that you supplied) hitting on a 20″ bong. (Also, why Blanchard went to a meeting with a cop with a backpack full of pot is yet another unanswered question.)
In the old (pre-Internet) days, people didn’t distribute pictures of themselves breaking the law. It was considered unwise. But in today’s anything online goes, people are posting pictures of themselves doing really stupid things.
By the way, Blanchard’s bad day didn’t stop with the backpack seizure. A subsequent search of Blanchard’s car revealed more drugs, digital scales, packaging materials, bongs, four knives, more than a dozen hypodermic syringes, gun powder and potassium nitrate. Then deputies searched Blanchard’s bedroom they say they found more chemicals used in bomb making and several printed materials on making bombs, including the Anarchist’s Cookbook.
I guess the good news is that Blanchard was smart enough not to post a picture of himself making a bomb not that it mattered.
