For once a chain email about something free is true
-
I thought it was an urban legend.
I was about to add the person who sent it to me to my spam filter list.
It couldn’t be true, could it?
I checked Snopes and it really is true.
Today, Tuesday April 25th, is a free ice cream cone day at Ben and Jerry’s.
Now why would I or anyone else put up with crowds to save a couple of bucks on an ice cream cone and who really needs an ice cream cone on a Tuesday anyway? Welcome to the world of bizarre consumer behavior where we consider it perfectly rational to spend $10 in time/effort to save $1 and do it all of the time (read Steven Levitt’s Freakonomics if you don’t understand or agree with this).
While it goes without saying, despite the truthfulness of this one email please do not believe that Bill Gates is really going to send you money for testing his email or that a wealthy Nigerian will pay you to help them get money out of the country.
Update: Speaking of free, we received a reader email asking us to link to this. I haven’t had a chance to look at it but in the spirit of “free cone day” we’re saying ‘what the heck?’.

They’ve been doing customer appreciation free cone day every year for as long as they’ve had scoop shops. unfortunately, I’m shackled to my desk, but if you go get a cone, enjoy it for me!

I think they’re open until 7 or 8 pm. You’re shackled until then? Bummer.

Well the joke turned out to be on me. I went tothe Ben and Jerry’s website which directed me to the Westwood store as participating in the 4/25 promotion. It turns out that that particular store closed last month. Nice job Ben and Jerry you jerks. Of course it’s my own fault for driving 20 min to get a free $3 cone.
