Charlie Sheen Says 9/11 is a fraud so it must be so

It appears that some in the left are so upset about the war on terror being a Republican issue that instead of making the Dems strong on domestic defense, they would like the entire issue to go just away. What better way to do that than to say that 9/11 never really happened? However the only way for that to be true would be for it to have been the result of a massive Bush conspiracy. And this is exactly what some in the lunatic fringe are charging.

“Red Dawn” star Charlie Sheen is the latest celebrity to question the veracity of the attacks. Sheen questions the “official story” the attack was carried out by Islamic terrorists, who presumably were similarly framed in the two embassy bombings in Africa as well as other attacks around the world.

In one of his more ironic statements, Sheen said:

“We’re not the conspiracy theorists on this particular issue.”

Sheen said that most people’s gut instinct, that the buildings had been deliberately imploded, was washed away by the incessant flood of the official version of events from day one.

Sheen also questioned President Bush’s actions on 9/11 and his location at the Booker Elementary School in Florida. Once Andy Card had whispered to Bush that America was under attack why didn’t the secret service immediately whisk Bush away to a secret location?

This is the evidence of a cover-up of what would be the greatest hoax of all time? Is Bin Laden in on the hoax or is he just going along for the ride? What about all of those folks making cell phone calls from the hijacked planes? Were they in on it too or just dupes as CIA operatives were executing the evil Bush/Cheney secret plan?

What about the attacks in Spain and London? Were those the work of Bush too? Was it because 9/11 worked so well that Bush decided to blow up the New Orleans levees? And who killed Princess Di and Nicole Simpson anyway?

Of course Sheen isn’t alone. There are a whole cadre of otherwise unknowns trying to eek out some fame with their lunatic theories. Steve Jones (not the Sex Pistol) is leading the pack.

Sheen is correct in one thing only. We have a right to question anything and everything in this country. It’s part of our ‘checks and balances.’ But we also have a right to tweak pictures in Photoshop when those doing the questioning makes asses of themselves.

Update: Conspiracy theory roundup at New York magazine here (h/t Hit and Run).

Update 2: With 147 91 comments as of Friday night 3/24 Sunday 3/26, this is our most-commented-upon post EVER!

The Independent Sources Wordpress spamfilter is accidentally treating some comments to this post as spam and putting them in moderation. We are culling them whenever we see them and apologize for the inconvenience. Anyone with a blog knows that without a filter we would have thousands of spam comments overwhelm us within days.

Update: We are going to be turning off comments (at 205!) and ask that the debate be moved over to here: Why do otherwise smart people believe conspiracy theories?

I love all of your assumptions. I’m not young. I’m 27, graduating law school this year, and I am a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy and will be a JAG attorney for the Navy by this time next year.

I’m not on your team…you don’t have a team. You have a bunch of fools that go around to try to spread radical propaganda, and nobody listens to you. I remind you of my twist of fate with Sheen and spin city that brought me to you. Therefore, I will be leaving now…only back to read any responses you might have but I will not write back. You’re welcome in advance for my future representation of the people that are fighting for your ability to maintain and facilitate this totally useless debate.

By the way, Mel is obviously not my real name. I chose it because Mel Gibson and his Conspiracy Theory movie. I hope even the truly dillusional can appreciate that humorsly ironic etymology.

Take care Mel. Good luck in the Navy. None of us on this board are arguing points that we do not believe in our hearts. Our data is researched. One more thing, my friend was in the Army and after I talked to him about 911 he had the same response you do. He told me that the very first thing in boot camp that he was told was not to believe any government conspiracy theories. Imagine that.. He was conditioned right from the start to go along with the official story and to not question authority (right or wrong). Of course, after watching several of my films on 911, he is coming around. He is actually spreading the word with me now. He knows that I am educated and have done my homework. That helps my credibility.

    Insider Says:

As promised, I’ll try to cover most of the questions lobbed directly at me and apologize for the delay in getting to them. As you may remember I spent last week-end in Las Vegas for Final Four. (If you want to get into a real conspiracy discussion ask my Vegas friends about the NCAA and East Coast sports establishment bias against west coast teams like UCLA and Gonzaga). Anyway…

Joe asked: “Insider, how about giving us all the name of the company that allows to make cell phone call from an air borne jet.”

Someone said that the technology did not exist for a cell phone to work on a plane way back in 2001. Since I never tried I can’t say. However I did climb Mt. Whitney in early 90s (9 or 10 years before 9/11) and some hot shot on top of the 14,500 foot mountain was successfully making cell calls with a basic cell phone of the era. If a call in the early 90s could be made from a rather remote 14,500 foot moutain then I’m not sure why calling from an airplane would be impossible. I’m not the telco expert perhaps you know more about cell technology than I and can explain how mr-I-just-climbed-a-mountain was able to do it.

Molech wrote “So you dissagree with a fellow American on the evidence he raises about an event that changed the course of our country’s history. What do you do first??? Photochop his picture like a 3rd grader and neglect to bring up any specific evidence he cites.”

Yes. Exactly. That’s why I have a blog so that when I disagree with someone or something I can make a funny picture of them. When a 2nd-rate actor takes the national stage on a topic that I personally feel he has zero credability/knowledge about I absolutely feel entitled to exercise my 1st Amendement right (not to mention my substandard Photoshop skills). I don’t single out Sheen as I have done the same thing to other “fellow” Americans Barbara Streisand (who I’m still waiting to move to Canada as she promised), Michael Moore, Oliver Stone, and Spike Lee.

You also talk about Iran (I think) but I’m not sure your suggestion about what we should do. Once again our “allies” Russia and France are not too crazy about our ideas in the region and the UN has had zero affect on them. Personally I have no idea what we should do and it spooks the hell out of me but I’m not the one remarking how we’re sitting “idly.” Is your contention that we should have invaded them instead of Iraq or that there is some sort of pressure we could be putting on them but we haven’t?

Finally, you ask me to “bring on the evidence.” This is just like my friend (who I discuss in the follow up post to the Sheen post) who challenged me to “prove that aliens are not amongst us.” Asking someone to prove a negative (that 9/11 wasn’t faked) is a hopeless cause which presumably is why you posed the question to me in the first place.

At this point, I would like to turn off comments to this post and move the coversation over to the follow-up (“Why do otherwise smart people believe conspiracy theories?”) so we don’t have comments on related topics going on in two places. Furthermore, I believe that the 9/11 true or false argument has played itself out. There will be those who so dislike Bush and what has happened since the attacks that Bush & Co simply must have been invovled in its planning (the cui bono syndrome) and there will be those who so distrust governments of any kind that 9/11 seems to perfect for it to have happened by chance (the anarchists view). With the 1000s of individual facts to interpret or misinterpret, it is no surprise that intelligent people such as yourself are able to find things that don’t make sense and for which the answers given to you are not acceptable. Because of that there will always be theories about conspiracies and debates like these. At least that’s my belief. Please check out the posting there and do not hesitate to share your views. For all I know, 20 years from now I’ll be in a FEMA gulag somewhere in Kansas rueing the day I didn’t believe you all.

As mentioned in the above comment, we are now turning off comments for this posting.

Please go to the follow-up posting to continue the discussion or better yet broaden it out into a discussion about conspiracy theories in general.

This is to avoid someone commenting there about something said here and visa versa.
