Rock-Paper-Scissors on TV, who’d have thought there was such a thing?

Thanks to the Wall Street Journal, Independent Sources now knows that there is an official league for Rock, Paper & Scissors. (Not only a league but also a world society, and of course they do not get along but that’s another story). The RPS league has also created their own “Girls of the RPS“.

So is Rock Paper Scissors all sizzle and sex appeal or is there a real sport in there somewhere? Here’s what the USARPS League as to say about themselves:

ROCK PAPER SCISSORS IS A SPORT?
Truly, RPS may be the world’s oldest sport. The game is tripartite, containing three elements: Rock Paper and Scissors. We all remember the basic rules from childhood: Rock beats Scissors, Scissors beat Paper and Paper beats Rock. Each element ties with itself. Three is the minimum number of different elements one needs for an interesting strategy game. If a game only has two elements, one might as well flip a coin. The addition of a third element introduces the concept of parity (each throw can win, lose or tie.) The roots of RPS go back much further than the mere creation of scissors or paper. Indeed, when one investigates the roots of RPS, one is looking at the origin of human consciousness itself.
