A Small Chandler Obit Mystery

On the front page of the Los Angeles Times’ obituary of former publisher Otis Chandler is a photo credited as dating from 1959, the year before he became publisher. Yet on the bulletin board he is holding, a tabloid-size newspaper has a headline reading “Otis Chandler Named Fourth Publisher in Times’ 79 Years.” That would place the year as 1881 + 79 = 1960. If the thumbtacked paper was a comp or mockup, that headline seems inconsistent with the obit’s characterization of Chandler as uncertain whether his father would name him publisher.

The photo, alas, is not part of the set placed online to accompany the article.

The piece is wonderful, and a reminder of how lucky the LA area is to have the Times, with all its flaws, rather than a mediocrity like so many U.S. dailies.

The Chandler photo also illustrates changing times: increases in daily circulation for all the papers listed on the board in Chandler’s office!
