Just plan bizarre: Man coughs up nail after 35 years

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” said the man with a metal nail embedded in his lung from a gardening accident in 1970. Mind you that most people would consider an inch-long sliver of metal in one’s lung to be “broke,” but that’s beside the point. Guy “Bud” Hart decided to leave the nail in there unless it started to cause a problem. It never did.

Then, more than 35 years later, the now 84-year-old Placerville man was stunned when a coughing fit expelled the almost forgotten nail. In what might be considered one of the greatest understatement’s of the year, Hart said: “I didn’t think something like that could happen.”

Over the decades, the nail worked his way through his body cavity and into his lung. Then last week when Hart was in the bathroom brushing his teeth, he started coughing and it “plopped right out.”

All in all, just plain weird.
