NYC Ground Zero Photo

This is a picture of a NYC Marathon Finishers medal that was no doubt hard-earned–a minimum of 26.2 miles and who knows how many miles training. For the person who received this medal however they decided instead of leaving it around their necks or taking it home, they put it up on a fence facing Ground Zero. I don’t know more than that but can only guess at the backstory. Some images are powerful enough that even we choose not to be snarky.

I’ll give you the backstory since the owner of this medal, Ron Tabb, is a friend of mine. He didn’t train for the marathon, but ran on a dare by some punk at his office who told him, “oldtimer, a good day for you is when you can jog your memory.” Ron finished the race alrighty, but ended up with poopy legs and intermittent dry heaves. Dehydrated and disoriented, he hung his medal on this fence believing he was draping it over his living room mantle. We found him that night in a shelter near Battery Park, eating turkey casserole and asking the cook for news about the Normandy landings.
