Ahmadinejad ran on a populist platform which must have been pretty appealing given the corruption of the country. However, there was so much apathy in the populace, not to mention interference by the clergy in exactly who could run, that the opposition didn't get there act together. Now they are living with the consequences of having a nut in office. As for the U.S., "fanactical Zionist cabal"? That's one theory. Here's another, the Democrats couldn't find a candidate to beat the incumbent. I like my theory better.
