The above brooding, troubled youth is Scott Dyleski who is charged with a northern California murder. We had to run his photo because the “students” charged in the story below are juveniles–hence no names and no photos. However, our guess is that we’re pretty close on the look.
Now for the story…
Once again we have two […]

Tip for car thieves (and most other criminals) :
If you want to document your crime for posterity, don’t leave the camera in the stolen car or at the crime scene.
In Redlands (CA), police found a disposable camera in an abandoned stolen vehicle. On the camera were both finger prints of the car thieves but also […]

At least some new cars in California now come with stickers stating that “The exhaust emitted from automobiles also contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, and other reproductive harm.”
I suppose this could be important information if you were breathing your new car’s exhaust all day.

Last month in Caught on Tape: High School Football Coach Seen Moving the Ball Marker we told the story of the assistant football coach who was videotaped cheating at a high school football game. For once, the punishment fit the crime. Read the update here.
On a related note, justice has also been served in the […]

“The controversial cowboy movie (Brokeback Mountain), which is rated R in part for its sexuality, also is hitting theaters at a time when filmmakers and studio executives are worried they are losing touch with audiences, as reflected by a yearlong box-office slump.” - Los Angeles Times, Can ‘Brokeback Mountain’ move the Heartland?
“‘Heterosexuals Attracted to Members […]

We all know the expression about the inevitability of “death and taxes.” Independent Sources covers both fairly regularly. But there is a different type of death than the ones we write about (Tookie Williams, Holly Ashcraft, Scott Peterson, etc.) which is when someone close to you passes and you assume the responsibility to managing the […]

Toys R Us is stocking “Books for the Whole Family,” such as James Patterson’s Mary Mary. I first thought the murder mystery was an odd choice, but it’s actually full of lessons for the kids. Here’s a bedtime story:
Lesson: Don’t be afraid of new things
This reinforces “always do your best.”
See? You’ll be surprised what you […]

What happens when cell phone executives select programming for their new video-on-demand service? Questionable programming, unless you’re not over your Ally Sheedy crush from high school. Sprint Nextel is rolling out a $7 / month video-on-demand service for its mobile phone customers, and one of the featured movies is … 1986’s ET-except-he’s-a-robot flick Short Circuit, […]

After three days on Tookie watch, I needed to do a story that doesn’t involve murder, execution, mayhem, mis-guided celebrities, etc. I came up with this:
The Gloves Come Off at LA Observed (sort of):
Independent Sources readers are already familiar with LA Observed since we point there frequently. In their own words, LA Observed doesn’t attempt […]

Area417 reports Holly Ashcraft is now out on bail.
No report on whether Holly is now going to pen a children’s book or ask gangs to stop fighting each other.
For those of you who don’t know, here is the whole sordid Holly Ashcraft story (link and link).

Two weeks ago the Los Angeles Times‘ Michael Hiltzik trumpeted in his blog that the mediocre retail sales figures from Thanksgiving weekend proved that the economy was in trouble — and Hiltzik, for one, couldn’t be happier:
The ideological spinners on the state of the U.S. economy made much of the recent upward revision in third-quarter […]

You wouldn’t know it by listening to Tookie’s supporters, but the State of California has just killed a very guilty man.
Instead of having multiple posts on this story, we’ve been adding updates to the original post up through tonight’s execution. Link below.

In a rush to capitalize on the exposure of Stanley “Tookie” William’s children’s books resulting from his bid for clemency and resulting execution, fellow murderer and death row inmate Scott Peterson is said to be rushing out a children’s book based on his own experiences with grieving children. Independent Sources was able to secure a […]
