Kid sits during Pledge. Gets teased. Sues. ACLU behind it all.
A 17-year old student wants to stand out and be noticed. He does this by sitting while others stand during the Pledge of Allegiance. Other students tease him–no doubt for being a grandstanding idiot–and he is lectured by his teacher for being ungrateful and unpatriotic. He is now suing the school district for damages in Federal Court. The school district already gives kids the right to not recite the pledge if they bring a note from their parents however they are required to stand as a sign of respect to the country that is giving him his free education.
Not surprising the ACLU finds merit in this meritless case believing that it is a First Amendment issue. (Of course to the ACLU everything is a 1st Amendment issue). They are supplying him his talking points.
The young man in question, Cameron Frazier, has not stood for the Pledge since he was in 6th grade so this isn’t an anti-war statement (unless he was protesting civil war in the Congo) or George Bush or the Patriot Act, etc., etc. No it’s just a misdirected young man testing boundaries and finding in this PC world that there just aren’t that many. He’s just upset because a teacher finally had the guts to have order in their classroom.
I love the ACLU’s statement which cites his citizenship as the right to not stand for the flag. The ACLU further states “…the real meaning of the flag–freedom, liberty and equality–has been tarnished by the recent policies of our government.” In other words, we don’t like the U.S. government so we will always oppose it regardless of the merits of the case in question.
Anyone want to guess how well young Cameron is going to do in life? My guess is not well once the novelty of his little rebellion passes. Being a poster child for lawsuit abuse, lack of perspective, and complete inability to go with the flow on things as simple as standing once a day all add up to one very unemployable young man–but at least he’ll have his principles he’ll be saying to himself.
