Free Crack For Picking Up Garbage: An Idea Whose Time Has Come?

Courtesy of Rosenblog, we’ve learned of a politician even loopier than what we’re used to here in California. One campaign promise: free crack.

Fortunately, he’s Canadian. Andrew Uitvlugt is a candidate for mayor of Kelowna, BC, population 105,000. In a video statement, he eschews the easy solutions to a mounting crime problem:

What I propose to do is possibly motivate people with drugs, to do constructive work like get them out there picking up garbage. And then we’ll give them some crack.

Now what’ll happen here is that after they’re done picking up their garbage, they’re going to feel somewhat good; they’re going to think to themselves “you know, I did a good job today,” and they’re going to maybe need less crack.

At the same time they’re not going to be buying crack from a drug dealer, so his clientele is going to go down.

And hopefully after these people do that enough, their self esteem will get built up, and they’ll get so used to working doing constructive things that they will no longer need the crack.

You can hear it for yourself here (click on “View Video Profile of Mayor and Council Candidates” at bottom center; the excerpt above starts at about 1:45 in).

Uitvlugt goes on to say that “by voting for me you’re going to be voting for somebody that’s open to new ideas … vote for Andrew Uitvlugt November 19th and you’ll get some changes.” Yes, giving addicts more crack in the hope that it helps their self esteem certainly is a new idea. Maybe not a good one. But certainly new.

Just think of it as an extension of the Canadian nanny state. Although we wonder if the beer drinkers will feel slighted that they still have to pay for their intoxicant of choice.

There’s more — according to CHBC-TV, “Uitvlugt would also like the homeless to have access to the city dump saying they could use scavenged materials to build things and get marketable skills.” An interesting thought; think of the Westside homes that could be decorated with such found art! We dare any politician in California to propose it here.

We can see Uitvlugt becoming an advisor to soft-on-crime California Assemblyman Mark Leno, who will then introduce a bill offering state-supplied crack to paroled sex offenders.

Actually that is a step ahead of what they are doing in Europe and it has been effective in reducing crime. Having a junkie (ex) for a brother I know how much crime is committed in efforts to secure a fix. If you eliminated the need to spend that much time and that much crime in order to get the drugs the rest of us would be safer. Not to mention you would eliminate most drug dealer and gang turf wars based on distribution. What would also happen is that the junkies could get a consistent source of drugs and wouldn’t be overdosing all the time raising the cost of all our medical care as junkies often end up in an emergency room with gun shot wounds or overdoses; we all know they don’t have insurance to pay the bill. What makes this a step ahead of Europe is that they actually have to work for the drugs here; in Europe they are just giving them away.

And yes I would like free beer but most people don’t resort to robbing houses and bank fraud to get a beer; nor do they have unprotected sex with liquor dealers with AIDS in order to score a beer.

, though. Note that Sharkey also states he is going to run for President in 2008. Ho-kay, time to take the meds, buddy. Continuing with the crazy political candidate theme, Andrew Uitvlugt (what a name) ran for mayor of Kelowna, BC partly on the platform that crack users should be encouraged to get jobs (like trash collection) and be paid in part with crack. Good idea! They’ll work, and smoke the crack, and work
