Andrea Yates Lawyer’s Hat Trick: 3 Inane Comments in one sentence

As an update to: “5x Child Killer Andrea Yates to Get Another Trial,“which was about Andrea Yates who murdered her five kids by drowning them in her bathtub, Independent Sources just read the celebratory quote by her lawyer, George Parnham, which make me want to toss him into that same bathtub(*):

“It’s a real good feeling that is tempered by our concern. Can you imagine the impact on her to hear once again what another Andrea Yates did in 2001?”

Let’s analyze this one sentence:

1. It wasn’t just a “good” feeling but a “real good” feeling getting her a new trial. [I can imagine a lot of emotions but “real good” isn’t one of them.]

2. His only concern was the potential impact on the killer having to actually hear about her crimes again? He makes no mention of the relatives (including the father, grandparents, etc.) who will have to hear once again how mom grabbed each kid, one by one, held their little heads under water, etc.? Even worse, the defense will once again be rolling out every possible excuse how it wasn’t her fault, the father was bad, the preacher was bad, the house they lived in was bad, etc., etc., etc.

3. He saved the best for last however. It was “another” Andrea Yates that killed her kids. Not this one? It wasn’t even her fault, but some other personality or being? I’m no psychiatrist (but I did take pysch 101 in college so I know almost as much as the pay-as-you-go shrinks that sell their “opinions” to the highest bidder), but isn’t denial to this level going to get in the way of moving forward? Is he really saying that this was the “bad” Andrea Yates and the bad Andrea Yates is now gone? Let’s not punish the good Andrea Yates for what the bad Andrea Yates has done? With this kind of mind crap being tossed around is it any wonder that so many people view psychiatry as having about as much scientific basis as fortune telling?

What Mr. Parnham’s statements tell me was that his efforts in getting the original conviction tossed out weren’t about making sure our justice system worked by giving everyone a chance at a fair trial but instead is an attempt to get this woman who squeezed the air out of each of her kids, one by one, out of jail. What’s next, that the killing spree was caused by a Twinkie gone bad?

Let’s not forget those really affected:

    Noah Yates - Feb. 26, 1994 - June 20, 2001
    John Yates - Dec. 12, 1995 - June 20, 2001
    Paul Yates - Sept. 13, 1997 - June 20, 2001
    Luke Yates - Feb. 15, 1999 - June 20, 2001
    Mary Yates - Nov. 30, 2000 - June 20, 2001

Others on this: SoCal Lawblog (straight coverage), I66 News (link to new trial announcement), Pardon my English (calls it coddling), Lady’s Ruminations (not happy about retrial) and Republic of T (who mistakenly thinks I call for ‘frontier justice.’).

(*) just to get him wet. I don’t believe in frontier justice.

I think that she knew exactly what she was doing - she was really mad at her husband - probably because he was not paying her any attention and she knew it - she figure - them out of the way - now he can pay some attention to me - she is not crazy - just have low self-esteem - like most women like her who have a lot of kids and don’t love them - because if she did - she would not have time to notice what he was doing - she would be too busy looking after he kids and making sure they had everything they needed because she chose to have them - she makes me sick!

It is a sad day when someone who has no experience with mental illness condemns a person that was very sick. I have found through my experience that when I judge someone harshly for things I have no experience in God at some time will put me in a situation that will help me have compassion for the person I have judged. I will be praying for you. And as far as thinking she knew exactly what she was doing, what is in our hearts come out of our mouth. I pray that you would open your heart to the tragedy this is for everyone concerned. How easy it is for me to sit in my house at my computer and pass judgement on the world. There is One who judges and that is not me so I pray that I may carry out His will for me today.
    Blessings to you,

It is a sad day when someone drowns her 5 kids and for that, yes, I judge her. Guess I’m a bad guy. Do I feel sorry for her? Sure a little. But do I believe any of the crap that her defense attornies are throwing out? No I do not. I fear that between the good attornies that she apparently has and (well-meaning) people like you she might one day find herself out of jail. Not a good outcome in my opinion.

She was crazy in the sense of drowing her children but she still knew right from wrong or she would not of called the police after she had done it. If stoning was around she would completely deserve it. She should not be granted another trial and I am confused to why there is even a debate or that she is granted bail. Another thing that I am confused on is why her husband is not on trial for leaving his kids with such a dangerous person. He supposably knew she was having problems but yet did nothing to fix it. He deserves to be stoned as well for standing by her. If her retrials rules her insane he definetly needs to be held liable for leaving his children with a dangerous mom. God will have his vengeance!
