In a development that might detract from the normal NFL stories of domestic violence, steroids, etc., two Carolina Panther cheerleaders have arrested at a bar called “Banana Joes” for engaging in sex in a public restroom. This promises to push all other NFL-related stories to the back of the sports section.

Mainstream media outlets including Fox Sports are already covering the story.

By the way, Angela (photo below) is an RN, according to her official Panthers’ bio, and her favorite quote is fortuitous: “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.”

Thomas(pictured below) is a student and says the most important thing in life is to, “Live every moment to the fullest and love like you’ll never be hurt.”

Update: The Carolina Panthers website is getting hammered from so much traffic and the bios of the offending cheerleaders have been pulled down. There are also questions as to why cheerleaders were on the road and guesses that any cheering they were there to do for the team would be in the hotel rooms. Expect the wives of married Panther players to travel with the team for the next several weeks.

Update: the identity of one of cheerleaders is in question. When booked, she gave a driver’s license of a “Kristen Lanier Owen”. Later the real Kristen Owen was surprised to hear of her arrest on the radio while she was several hundred miles away. Said family is now thinking of filing a defamation lawsuit.

ESPN: When Thomas was arrested, she gave police the name of another Panthers cheerleader — Kristen Lanier Owen, the Observer and TampaBay10.com reported. Thomas, who was charged with one count of battery, might face additional charges for lying to police, once they confirm her identity.

Update: Both published and broadcast reports say that Angela “was so drunk she could barely stand. Police also described her as rude and belligerent toward them.”

Update: Surprise! The story is generating a lot of interest! “Alcohol, sex and cheerleaders are apparently the ingredients for a hot story, because I am getting flooded with calls” says Laura McElroy, Tampa police spokeswoman, commenting on the world-wide interest in the story of Carolina Panther cheerleaders Renee Thomas, 20, and Angela Keathley, 26, arrested after a late-night sexual encounter in a Tampa bar.

Update: Satirical site Nose on your face as reported that upwards of 75,000 adult men have signed up for Carolina’s Learn To Cheer With The Pantherette’s summer cheer-leading camp within the last 24 hours.

Update: Penthouse magazine is (predictably) making an offer to the former cheerleaders. The P.R. woman for the magazine confirmed it Monday night.

Update: More details emerging from what happened:

Witnesses said the bar was busy and there was a line to use the women’s restroom. Police said Renee Thomas and another Panther cheerleader, Angela Keathley, were having sex in the stall. When they came out, the women who were waiting to use the bathroom let them have it. “She was screaming I am a Panther cheerleader. I’m not going to get arrested for this. And, I was like, that’s good for you but you are going to jail,” the alleged victim Melissa Holden said.
