Washington, November 3, 1943 — In a letter to Secretary of War Henry Stimson on Thursday, Sen. Sheridan Downey, D-Calif., said the uncertainty over when U.S. forces will be withdrawn from the Pacific Theater is untenable amid continued violence.
“I am writing to express my frustration over the administration’s continued failure to set benchmarks for the drawdown of U.S. forces from the Pacific and for the return of the Army,” Downey said. “As such, I request that you immediately make public to the American people what plan - if any - exists for a significant reduction in force levels …”
Wait — that was Barbara Boxer, sensing a showboating opportunity today:
In a letter to Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Thursday, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said the uncertainty over when U.S. forces will be withdrawn from Iraq is untenable amid continued violence.
“I am writing to express my frustration over the administration’s continued failure to set benchmarks for the drawdown of U.S. forces from Iraq and for the return of the National Guard,” Boxer said. “As such, I request that you immediately make public to the American people what plan - if any - exists for a significant reduction in force levels after the upcoming elections in Iraq.”
Or, in other words, “make public how long the Baathists, Al-Queda, and their sympathizers have to hang on before they can declare victory.”
