CBS2 uses circa-1996 terms to describe new website

On the CBS2 6 pm newscast tonight, Los Angeles anchor Paul Magers promoted the station’s new website touting that is “always on.” Wow, this is really a differentiating factor against those other web sites that close down at 10 pm. And in case you didn’t immediately understand the importance of “always on” they said it again. He introduced the newly designed site by saying “now there is another way to get the news you want, whenever you want it, wherever you want it…” yessiree, it’s called the “Internet”!

That’s right, even if the newscast is not on TV, you can use Prodigy to dial up into the “Internet,” launch a “browser” to get onto to the “world wide web” and the CBS2 site will be “on”, always! I don’t know how they do it! (Having just watch Austin Powers, I was half-expected Magers to be making little finger quotation marks a la Dr. Evil whenever he employed an Internet term).

Magers also made a big deal that the new site has the “revolutionary Flash video technology.” Why didn’t they point out that they are also using the revolutionary JPEG compression or the revolutionary ASCII type system? I think it is also using those “revolutionary links” to move between pages.

That said, there are some nice features such as the “save” feature which allows to put aside video to watch at another time (great for when you are at work) but somehow they even make that sound dorky.

It makes you wonder if the copywriters had ever really used the web or if they felt they needed to script the promo that way else their couch potato viewers get confused.
