Parents hope to cash in big on son’s death

Overlawyered reports:

A $50 million lawsuit is being filed against Hoboken and its police department by the parents of a 16-year-old boy who drowned in the Hudson River shortly after escaping from Hoboken Police Headquarters. Yes, that’s right if something happens to you while you are escaping the police you can sue them.

That in itself is dumb enough but Overlawyered left out the best quote which came from the family’s attorney:

“He was in the custody of the police department, he was a juvenile and it was their responsibility to maintain his safety…”

Someone needs to tell him that the boy was escaping and that it is a little hard to maintain the safety of someone who jumps through a window, flees the police station, and then jumps into the Hudson River.

Another point worth raising. The boy was 16-years old and his parents never bothered to have him taught to swim. Isn’t that negligence?
