ACLU Suing Tampa Bay Bucs: Sadly it’s not on behalf of pirates offended by the team’s name

Reuters reports:

A lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida on behalf of high school teacher Gordon Johnston, challenges a policy approved by the Tampa Sports Authority in September requiring physical searches of every fan entering Raymond James Stadium for National Football League games.

When I saw the headline I had hoped that the ACLU was finally stepping up for the rights of buccaneers, pirates, plunderers, desperados and others hurt and offended by the team’s name. Even worse than the name, the team’s imagery and mascot play up every negative and cliche stereotype that one could imagine of a scoundrel. Surely the ACLU was going to stand up for those maligned by this blatant racism.

However instead of attacking mascot racism, the lawsuit is simply about searches and constitutional rights, blah, blah, blah. In a word–boring!
