Barbara Boxer’s SCOTUS Time-line
For those of you interested in the specifics of the Roberts confirmation here is the time-line taken from the SCOTUSblog:
Today or tomorrow: President’s formal nomination of Roberts sent to the Senate
Monday, Sept. 12 — Committee hearings open, with opening statements by members and by Judge Roberts
Tuesday, Sept. 13 — Questioning of Roberts begins
Thursday or Friday, Sept. 15 or 16 — Committee hearings expected to conclude
Thursday, Sept. 22 — Target date for vote in Judiciary Committee
Monday, Sept. 26 — Target date for opening of floor debate on the nomination
Thursday or Friday, Sept. 29 or 30 — Target dates for final Senate vote on confirmation.
SCOTUSblog did a pretty good job summarizing but they left out a few things, including:
Monday, September 12th California Senator Barbara Boxer reiterates “neither support for nor opposition to” John Roberts and states that she will base her decision on Roberts’ answers given during the hearing.
Wednesday, September 14th Boxer reiterates “neither support for nor opposition to” John Roberts and states that she will base her decision on Roberts’ willingness to be forthright during the hearings.
Friday, September 16th Boxer again reiterates “neither support for nor opposition to” John Roberts and states that she will base her decision on after further reflection of Roberts’ answers given during the hearing.
Wednesday, September 21st California Senator Barbara Boxer reiterates “neither support for nor opposition to” John Roberts and states that she will base her decision in part on the Judiciary Committee vote.
Monday, September 26th Boxer reiterates yet again that she has “neither support for nor opposition to” John Roberts and that she will base her decision on the floor debate.
Tuesday, September 27th to no one’s surprise, Boxer reiterates “neither support for nor opposition to” John Roberts and states that she will base her decision on Roberts’ answers to the 14,000 questions submitted to Boxer’s web site.
Thursday, September 29th Boxer reiterates “neither support for nor opposition to” John Roberts and but implores President Bush to nominate a liberal to “fill the O’Connor seat.”
Friday, September 30th, Boxer denounces Roberts as an anti-abortion, conservative, white male who plans to move the court to the far right and cites his failure to completely and honestly answer all questions presented to him during the hearings and specifically his failure to respond to the more than 14,000 questions emailed to him by citizens concerned about the direction of the court.
