San Francisco Rejects WW2 / Cold War Memorial on the Battleship Iowa
San Francisco’s rejection of the Battleship Iowa and an associated museum of WW2 and the Cold War is back in the news again. When we first posted about it in July — San Francisco Rejects “Some Military Honor Thing” (We Call It The Battleship Iowa) — we noted that the San Francisco supervisors seemed to be confusing their hatred of the current administration with respect for the history of this country and its military. One supervisor said
“For Tom and I it’s very difficult to advocate for some military honor thing when people are being harassed and even killed and are unable to serve in the military because they are gay and lesbian.”
We commented:
Iowa was purpose-built to fight the Japanese and German navies in a war that ultimately cost 500,000 American lives. Is it possible for the Supervisors to acknowledge that a sometimes this nation needs to go to war, and that a “military honor thing” is exactly the right tribute to the lives sacrificed? Do the “majority of San Franciscans” wish their grandparents hadn’t fought that war?
Other quotable reactions:
Dangerous Dan » San Fran and the USS Iowa: “Every time San Francisco seems to have pegged the moonbat dial, it seems to outdo itself. … Yes, instead of honoring the great ship, its sailors, and what it did, they’d rather poke the military in the eye because they don’t approve of the current war.”
The Interocitor: They should call it performance art: “The SF Supervisors are taking a Bold Political Stand™ against the Iraq War and the military. There seems to be a conservation law regarding government stupidity, and it seems to have a high local value in SF.”
Roscoe’s Blog: San Francisco Rejects the Iowa: “oh well, San Francisco is out of range from (the Iowa’s probable new home in) Stockton, anyway.”
Heliopolis » We (Would Have) Left Our Battleship in San Francisco? “I have a recommendation, though. If we ever end up invaded … I would ask that we do nothing to liberate San Francisco from the invaders. … when they beg us for help and freedom, we give them a piece of advice before slamming the phone down: ‘Remember the Iowa.’”
Chrenkoff: “In the meantime, feel free to offer city supervisors some ideas on how to recognize war in a peaceful sort of way. Try sinking the USS Iowa to make it a defeated sort of an attraction, perhaps. Or maybe invest in a giant white flag to be flown over the city hall.”
