California Bans A Practice That Does Not Exist

The Sacramento Bee tells us that fishermen with computers are not going to be allowed to combine the two:

California on Friday is set to join a host of states racing to outlaw remote game hunting over the Internet, and it intends to go further by banning cyber-fishing as well.

… In addition to Texas, seven states - Maine, Minnesota, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Vermont - have already adopted similar (anti-remote control hunting) rules.

California’s proposal goes further than all these states by applying the same prohibitions to computer-assisted remote fishing, which apparently has yet to be offered anywhere.

California game rules already allow certain fish species to be caught by spear or bow-and-arrow. State officials fear Lockwood’s (remote control hunting) innovations could eventually be applied in these situations as well.

“We figured, let’s get ahead of the curve,” said Steve Martarano, spokesman for the Department of Fish and Game. …

No word yet on the fate of real-time adult webcam sites, which offer a different sort of remote control.
