Problogger: Blogspot Blogs to be Deleted from some Search Engines to combat Spam Blogs?

Mark Cuban, owner of Ice Rocket, writes that blogs hosted on free blogspot domains are getting close to being eliminated from Ice Rocket and other search engines because of the increasing problem of Spam Blogs (or Splogs as they’ve been called a lot more lately). Mark also puts the finger onto Google for not doing enough about Splogs:

‘Blogger is by far the worst offender. Google seems to be working hard to adjust their relevancy indexes to exclude splog from having influence on search rankings, but they don’t seem to be doing anything more than removing reported splogs. Kind of like going after the zombies one at a time with a shovel. Can we get some help on this Google?…

If you are an individual blogger whose blog is hosted on blogspot.com, every day the chances of you being excluded from icerocket.com’s, and other search engines’ indexes increases. It’s not just blogspot.com, pretty much 90plus percent of blogs hosted on .info sites are splogs as well.’

I’m sure there will be plenty of legitimate blogspot.com blogs and .info bloggers out there who will have something to say about this.

Independent Sources was formerly a Blogspot blog and many blogs that we frequent are hosted on Blogspot. This is a story that is not going to go away.

Update: Boxer Watch, Mayor Sam and Democracy Market are just a few of the blogs we visit that are on Blogspot and could be affected. While Independent Sources doesn’t advocate moving away from Blogger just because of one search engine, we can tell you that from our experience the Blogger structure was far too constricting for what we wanted to do so we moved to an ISP equipped with Word Press. (It also has the benefit of keeping you away from Blogspot denizens like Blueflypaper!).

Oh, great. I’ve stayed with blogspot because it’s easy and I’m a techno-idiot. Any recommendations for another host that’s user friendly?

I believe “spam that pollutes the blogosphere” should be referred to as “SMOG”….

I’m sure the whizzes at all-knowing google can figure out how to more quickly identify the spam blogs. Especially since they own Blogger.

Ignoring the largest Blog service provider is not a good option, especially if it happens to be Google; but there are other ways to fight Splogging.

It may have been Cuban’s way of taking a shot over their bow to prod action or perhaps just to get some press for his own work. I can tell you that when Independnent Sources uses Technorati the spam blogs are all over that and when people claim that “a blog is created every second” or whatever stat they are using I’m not sure how much those #s are poluted by the bots.

Blogspot should just start policing its users a little better. There is all kinds of bullshit business advertisements and they should be shut down. No one really does business through a blospot page anyway.

Well they just recently got around to adding photo support in a way that didn’t require third party tools so we know that they are still adding to it. That said they haven’t incorporated Google Ad Sense into Blogger and adding links is still not intuitive so it’s hard to say where on their list spam blogs are.

Also, an evil person would say that they like the fact that less sophisticated search engines (like Technorati) don’t weed out the spam thereby making Google’s sophistication that much more of a distinction.
