Hollywood: Suicide Bombers, Assassination, and Other Laff Riots
It’s hard to see how this movie will be funny:
Hollywood producers revise film script involving suicide bombers
Hollywood producers of the black comedy American Dreamz are reconsidering the script after the London attacks because it involves suicide bombers attempting to assassinate the American president.
The film, starring Hugh Grant, Dennis Quaid and Willem Dafoe, features a group of Pakistani terrorists, who target a mentally frail president played by Quaid.
We were pointed to this by a post at TownHall.com titled Hollywood’s New War Effort: Terrorism Chic. In it, Jason Apuzzo summarizes upcoming Hollywood films, of which he writes:
Its appetite whetted by “Fahrenheit 9/11“’s $222 million worldwide gross, Hollywood thinks it’s found a formula for both financial security and critical plaudits: noxious anti-American storylines, bathed in the warm glow of star power.
He not only cites Oliver Stone’s WTC project (see our 9/11 Movie: With Ward Churchill Apparently Too Busy, Paramount Turns to Oliver Stone), but the adaptation of former counter-terror official Richard Clarke’s novel The Scorpion’s Gate (apparently about oil companies, politicians, and the threat of nuclear war in the Middle East) and The Chancellor Manuscript (intelligence agencies blackmail politicians to control policy).
Apuzzo could be over the top in his blanket condemnation. Syriana, which he describes as featuring oil companies and American politicians attempting to redraw the map of the Middle East, actually sounds much more complex (it is written and directed by Traffic’s screenwriter — here are script and rough cut reviews).
But then again, would I bet against Hollywood delivering a series of films featuring noble terrorists and evil Americans who deserve whatever happens to them?
No.
