Ford and Rockefeller Foundations offer ACLU $1.15 million to not support terrorism (ACLU refuses)
The ACLU refused contributions from longtime donors that were concerned about their money knowingly going to the causes of terrorism. Stop the ACLU reported:
In October of 2004, the ACLU turned down $1.15 million in funding from two of it’s most generous and loyal contributors, the Ford and Rockefeller foundations, saying new anti-terrorism restrictions demanded by the institutions make it unable to accept their funds.
“The Ford Foundation now bars recipients of its funds from engaging in any activity that “promotes violence, terrorism, bigotry, or the destruction of any state.”
The Rockefeller Foundation’s provisions state that recipients of its funds may not “directly or indirectly engage in, promote, or support other organizations or individuals who engage in or promote terrorist activity.”
Independent Sources is going to take the high road and simply leave with the question of why an organization could not agree to such basic provisions? Shouldn’t these already be part of the ACLU charter? And what did the ACLU have to say about the donation refusal?
It is a sad day when two of this country’s most beloved and respected foundations feel they are operating in such a climate of fear and intimidation that they are compelled to require thousands of recipients to accept vague grant language which could have a chilling effect on civil liberties.
It is indeed a sad day when the ACLU, an organization that purports to be the “nation’s guardian of liberty,” can’t even agree to not “directly or indirectly engage in, promote, or support other organizations or individuals who engage in or promote terrorist activity.” What is so hard about that?
Note to Ford and Rockefeller Foundations: If the money is still available, Independent Sources would be more than happy to oblige by those same restrictions should you be interested in making a similar donation to us. Unlike the ACLU, Independent Sources does not support, engage or promote terrorist activity.
