The Blogosphere Kicks Around The Great Democratic Non-Exodus of 2005
Last week we learned that despite post-election bloviating, Democrats failed to emmigrate to Canada after John Kerry’s defeat (Democrats Broke Promise, Didn’t Emigrate After The Election). The blogosphere had some fun with this, best summarized in these two headlines:
We Even Offered To Help You Pack (Bogus Gold)
MoveNot.org (Justin Lollie)
Others searched for explanations. Canadian The Files of the Phantom Observer thinks “they had a look at Canada’s immigration procedures, and decided it would take them longer to do the paperwork than to wait until Bush retired from office.” Fellow Calfornian Drink This wonders “if it’s related to this … Canada wins dumbest government at World Stupidity Awards.” The Berkeley conservatives at Res Ipsa Loquitur have a unique view: “The reason why is probably because these people came to their sense and realized that this country re-elected a pretty “liberal” President considering his spending, immigration, and foreign policies, in some senses more liberal than Bill Clinton.” (We’re pretty sure 99+% of the people who voted for John Kerry wouldn’t agree).
Perhaps the Democrats didn’t examine enough options? Tran Sient’s Watch thinks the Democrats need to look farther north … and east: Utopia in Finland, A New Home For Democrats.
An ex-pat (lefty?) living in Cambodia The Phnom Penh may have unintentionally provided another possible cause: Democrat self-delusion (we’re pretty sure the following is not meant to be funny):
Canada’s a little too scary after all: In the wake of the last “election”, several of my friends expressed an intention to move to Canada, or at least somewhere outside the US. None of them actually did it, and it seems that makes them pretty typical Americans.
And I’m glad of it. Someone should be there, fighting the good fight. Besides, things are looking pretty bad for the Republicans in the next couple of elections. If only the Democrats could articulate a compelling vision, it’d be a lock — but “we’re not Bush” may get them through anyway.
(He may have missed this realization from the Chairman of the Democratic Party: “We need a message. It has to be clear.” — Howard Dean, about ten months too late, August 8, 2005)
On a micro level, Hawkeye Republican had one simple — now unfulfilled — wish: “I was so hoping for one less Baldwin…”
“Proud To Be Canadian” doubted that this story would get the same play as the original threats to emigrate: “(I’m) waiting for the (Canadian) … liberal media stories about this news, as a follow-up to their huge sensational stories predicting an enormous “wave” of disgruntled anti-Bush Americans jumping ship for more liberal-friendly Canada after Bush’s massive conservative victory.”
A quick search shows he was right about the lack of MSM attention.
Finally, another left-side blogger says “Just wait till Hillary takes office” … although the Los Angeles Times would have you believe that’s the new centrist Hillary Clinton (we say, “nice try”), so why should anyone leave?
(off topic: the highly entertaining near-future / alternate history Weapons of Choice features the aircraft carrier USS Hillary Clinton, named after “the most uncompromising wartime president in the history of the United States” –! (I guess that’s why it’s an alternate history — ed.))
Independent Sources thinks it’s not too late for Democrats to leave, and is working on a proposal. Hint: it involves Canada’s need to rapidly populate uninhabited Hans Island before the Danes get there …
