"and hopes the court accepts his statement..."

and it appears that the count did indeed accepted his statement. However if he was indeed sorry why did he stop cooperating with the feds thereby minimizing the chances of the next attack attempt being successful? I agree with Count Floyd's comment, the only thing he's sorry about was getting caught.

SAO: Thank you. I caught Insider's meaning.

I was, however, referring to the defense lawyer who said ""Mr. Ressam knows what he did was wrong and hopes the court accepts his statement that he is truly sorry.""

Insider: I noticed the judge's self congratulation as well. I find it hard to credit.

Yes, I have it right up there with "I didn't do it" as things to tune out from a defendent. That said, I'd rather have them admitting wrong-doing than being defiant. In this particular case however, and which was the purpose of the post, is that the sentence is far too light. He aimed to kill as many people as possible plus untold property damage all in the name of Jihad fascism. Futhermore, he stopped cooperating 2 years ago. Toghether I would have given him the maximum. But we had a judge who felt the U.S. was on trial and took the opportunity to lecture the government.

BigDog, I'm confident Insider intended sarcasm when he wrote "I guess as long as he promises not to do it again"

American jurisprudence looks all too often for signs of remorse or "I'm sorry". Sometimes juries and judges are even outraged when apologies are not proffered. "I'm sorry" for violent crime, terrorism, rape murder or what have you isn't relevant.

<!--%kramer-pre%-->talk tough about dying as martyrs. Arafat blathered about becoming a martyr regularly. He didn't, of course, he died an old man with a big bank account. What terrorist really want is not their own deaths, but power, wealth, conquest... and women. Wrong Message, Wrong Time, Wrong Way : " Ahmed Ressam, the Islamic Jihadist terrorist would-be LAX bomber/mass killer, was just sentenced to 22 years.
