Weekend Edition: Ecologically Sensitive Blogging

Inspired by the Wired article “This Blog is 100% Solar” — about boutique data centers that run on solar power — as well as Brad Pitt’s carbon-neutral lifestyle, we thought we’d provide some advice on how to use this blog in an energy-efficient way:

1) lowercase letters are smaller than uppercase letters and use less energy to transmit and display. Try to read articles with few proper names and many long sentences.

2) fancy sites with lots of images and pulldown menus make your processor work harder. Stick to text-only sites like this one.

3) turn your monitor on only when you need to see what’s on your screen, like when you need to move the mouse pointer to a link. The rest of the time, memorize what’s on your screen, then turn off the display.

4) cold at night? Keep your PC in your bed and save on your heating bill.

5) Independent Sources‘ servers are powered by solar geothermal windmills. Big news sites get their energy from raw sewage. You decide which one you want more of.
