Weekend Edition: Chick Flick Takes Non-Chick Flick Turn or “How Stella Lost Her Groom”

I have to admit that I’m not the kind of person who would watch “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” but I certainly appreciate the irony of the recent discovery that the real life story of Stella and her “groove” is so bawdy and sordid.

For those of you who don’t know the story, writer Terry McMillan went on a tropical vacation in Jamaica and met boy-toy Jonathan Plummer. She thought he was a stud, fell in love with him, and brought him back to the States. High on her infatuation with Johnathan, she cranked out “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” and women across the country yelled at their husbands for not being more like Jonathan!

It turns out that Jonathan wasn’t quite the stud she thought he was and in the end the one thing that they had most in common was their love for good looking men. Yes, Johnathan is gay and now out of the closet. Charges and counter-charges are flying back and forth between their legal camps peppered with stories of gay chat sites and tantrums being thrown at Jonathan’s dog-grooming business.

In looking at her history, McMillan tends to put her real-life personal experiences into her writing so her next book might be the first one that I’m interested in reading.

It wasn’t just husbands be like Jonathan. It was that a woman could reach a certain age and still have that sweep you off your feet romance. It took her 6 years to find out. I am now returning to my former cynical state.

    “Jonathan’s dog-grooming business.”

THAT wasn’t a CLUE he was playing for the other team?

Apparently the book was good (didn’t read it), and the movie was a hit (liked it), so it MAY have been worth it, but Terry should find herself some better girlfriends… ones that shake her and let her in on a little reality. Yikes.
