“I am Putin’ This Ring In My Pocket” or Vladimir’s Bling Bling
When Robert Kraft (owner of the New England Patriots) and a group of American executives had a meeting with Russian leader Vladmir Putin, Kraft handed Putin his gaudy 124–diamond Super Bowl ring. Putin fitted his finger with the ring, removed it, and in characteristic Russian style slipped it into his pocket.
Inquiring minds want to know did Kraft intend to give Putin the ring as a gift or did Putin misunderstand the gesture and assume the ring was his for the taking?
The story gained steam Wednesday, when reports of the incident surfaced. A story in the New York Sun indicated Kraft did not mean to give the ring to Putin, but wasn’t sure how to ask for the bauble back. The Sun cited anonymous sources in reporting Kraft was searching for a tactful way to ask for the ring. But with the Patriots swarmed with inquiries Wednesday, Kraft relented and issued a statement that it was actually a gift.
Smart move Robert. It is usually not a good idea to challenge the former head of one of the world’s largest espionage organizations. Just ask Mikhail Khodorkovskii.
