LA Times, Iraq Policy, and the Joys of Blogging

I got up a little early this morning because I knew there would be a lot to digest in the LAT’s analysis of the President’s speech. I was also interested to see what Independent Sources new work-in-progess logo looked like.

After reading today’s “New Analysis” column which was dedicated to the speech, I decided to quickly check out a few bloggers who have a penchant for critiquing the paper’s coverage of this topic to see their takes. Lucky for me that I did, because the very first such site visited, Patterico’s Pontifications, already had laid out a detailed analysis of the Times  As War Shifts, So Does the Message”.

One thing you can’t easily do in mainstream media is to point readers to another source. I can’t imagine opening my copy of the LAT and coming across an interesting headline with the accompanying comment (“New York Times is already covering this story quite well, so go get today’s edition, read their piece, and then come back to us.”). But in blogsville, we can do that. So with no further adieu:

This morning, the L.A. Times continues to push its pet myth that President Bush hardly said a word about democracy in Iraq until after we failed to find stockpiles of WMD. Moreover, the paper accuses Bush of shifting and retooling his rhetoric, when Bush has been consistent in arguing that we must prevent Iraq from becoming a safe haven for terrorists. The paper is predictably defeatist in attitude, no doubt revealing the anti-war biases of those involved in covering the speech.
