John Edwards Wishes Howard Dean Would Just Go Away

[Ed. Note: The second post from our newest contributor, who may have even voted Democratic in the last election. He's young.]

A major problem with being an American of reason and intelligence is trying to figure out exactly what the hell people like Jesse Jackson and Howard Dean are talking about … a problem John Edwards is facing daily.

Edwards was quick to react to Dean’s second-most recent crazy statement, that Republicans “have never made an honest living in their lives”, stating that Dean was a voice he “didn’t agree with.” However, Edwards was soon back on the horse, defending Dean’s overall view of Republicans, or at least his opinion of their failure to work for America’s working class.

Now, it’s gone horribly awry again, with Dean declaring Republicans “pretty much a white, Christian party”, as though Dems can just write off the whole white Christian vote.

Sometime during Spring 2004 Howard Dean forgot that the purpose of a political party is to actually win elections. He’d rather get 100% of the 20% of Americans who identify themselves as liberal rather than 51% of the entire electorate. Meanwhile, a moderate like Edwards has to hope his working class core stays true to him, rather than his misguided party.

At this point, Edwards is like a promising kid hanging out with the wrong crowd … the Dems have become the party charisma forgot‚ while rapidly becoming the party sensibility forgot (that’s especially true here in California — see every post regarding California Dems on this site). Luckily for Edwards, he’s young enough that he can sit out a Presidential bid in 2008. The crazier Dean gets, the more time and energy Edwards can devote to his stricken wife Elizabeth, without looking like he leapt from the sinking Democrat ship.
