Not Just Plagiarism, But Dumb Plagiarism
There is the first of a series on Ward Churchill in the Rocky Mountain News today, but a story Friday caught our eye. In 1989, 1991, and 2002 he used large portions of a pamphlet originally produced in 1972 by an environmental organization called “Dam the Dams.” They were protesting various plans to dam major rivers in British Columbia and transport the water to the U.S. Churchill initially gave Dam the Dams co-credit; in the later versions, he took sole credit.
Another instance of plagiarism by Churchill is no surprise. What’s amusing is that the water projects that the essay was protesting were largely dead by the mid 1970’s — fifteen years before he first wrote about them as a current threat, and a quarter century before his most recent version. The issue was so dead that, well before his essay first appeared, Dam the Dams had disbanded.
Up next: suspicions over Churchill’s claims to have blown the lid off White House’s involvement in a burglary at the Watergate.
