Weekend Edition: Michael Jackson Is No Jennifer Beals
When does Michael Jackson lose his media status as a current pop star? Over 25,000 websites, according to Google, refer to “pop star Michael Jackson;” only five refer to him as a “former” or one time” pop star. Is Cyndi Lauper, whose biggest album was also in the early 1980’s, still a pop star? Quiet Riot? What about contemporaries in other media, such as Judd Nelson or Molly Ringwald? Are they still stars? Is “star” a title conferred for life? Shouldn’t years of declining album sales and apathy from popular culture (except for when he’s naughty) mean that journalists should start tagging Michael with the dreaded “ex-?”
