Mystery Unsolved: How Amazon.com’s Authors and Others Got it So Wrong on Deep Throat
If over the several years you had been curious about the identity of Deep Throat, you might have searched Amazon.com and purchased any number of books on the subject. Unfortunately, you would have spent a lot of time and money to get the wrong information. As it turns out, with a mystery as big as the identity of Deep Throat it seems that pretty much anyone with a plausible theory was able to get a book published. In the end, however, it is a reminder that even detailed 300 page investigative books written by insiders can be deadly WRONG!!!
Here are a few books that in hindsight look pretty darn silly given Mark Felt’s admission that he is indeed “Deep Throat.” Speculating who this person was became a cottage industry that in a moment’s notice was wiped out. The bad news for these authors is how they scrupulously detailed their theories and allegations and as a group they were so WRONG!!!
Among the now-irrelevant books and discarded theories:
Amazon.com: Books: Deep Throat: The Watergate Informant
What do we know about Deep Throat? He was a Federal Prosecutor in the Justice Department, Assistant to Chief Judge Sirica during Watergate. This Scotch-drinking Jesuit-trained lawyer was the Court’s liaison to the FBI and CIA, a former spy, an expert in conspiracy law. Bob Woodward, in a 1994 phone interview, confirmed the man was an informant to him on Watergate He has become a modern legend, a template for Hollywood characters, the G-Man in the parking garage, the smoking man in a trenchcoat. Joseph Lowther is the man with the deep voice, the mysterious informant who helped bring down a President … WRONG!!!
Amazon.com: Books: In Search of Deep Throat : The Greatest Political Mystery of Our Time
Ever since the Watergate scandal broke, people have speculated on the identity of Deep Throat, Woodward and Bernstein’s secretive source. Nixon administration insider Leonard Garment went In Search of Deep Throat to solve the mystery. On page 2 of his book, Garment reveals his theory…(note: early on in the book we are told the main suspect is a lawyer and Nixon supporter by the name of John Sears…WRONG!!!
Of course, book authors weren’t the only ones capitalizing on the mystery with inaccurate solutions.
Deep Throat: Uncovered | Department of Journalism | University of Illinois
After a four-year investigation, students at the Department of Journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have determined the identity of Deep Throat, the most elusive, anonymous news source in history: Fred Fielding, deputy counsel to former President Richard Nixon…WRONG!!!
Presence of Mind - Who Was Deep Throat?
The list of likely suspects has included former White House aide and current network anchor Diane Sawyer; Nixon’s chief of staff, Alexander Haig; acting FBI director Patrick Gray; and John Sears, one of Nixon’s deputy counsels. At the same time, some have argued that Deep Throat wasn’t one person but a composite of several sources, while others have posited that he was merely a literary invention…WRONG!!!
Anyway, you get the idea. But maybe one person outside of the circle of Feld, Woodward and Bernstein suspected the right person.
On April 22 of this year, at a press conference in the Watergate Hotel, I announced that my students and I had deduced that Fred Fielding was indeed Deep Throat. The next day, I got an e-mail from John Dean: “I’ll bet you a hundred dollars that you’re wrong about Fielding.”
Bad bet Mr. Gaines.
