Men of the People
The Economist, 5/28/2005, reviewing the book “Mao: The Unknown Story”:
“Mao, it seems, was utterly contemptuous of the downtrodden masses whose savior the Party proclaimed itself to be.”
The Los Angeles Times, Friday, announcing that big-time Democratic contributor David Geffen has to allow non-billionaires near his house:
(On Thursday) coastal-access advocates set foot on the sand at Tinseltown titan David Geffen’s sprawling beachfront estate … celebrating the opening of a 9-foot-wide public pathway to the ocean. Creation of the walkway came after Geffen reluctantly made good on a 22-year-old legal promise to let the public onto part of Carbon Beach, a mile-long stretch of sand east of the Malibu Pier. The public will have access to the path as well as most of the beach in front of the Geffen estate. … (Geffen) pledged in 1983 to open a public pathway to the beach in exchange for Coastal Commission permission to build his Cape Cod-style compound across several beachfront lots.
Which side of Al Gore’s “The people versus the powerful” did Geffen come down on again?
[PS: Geffen reimbursed the State of California and Access for All, a nonprofit, $300,000 for legal fees they incurred in the fight to open the pathway]
